The Life Story

There is a link to a video on YouTube called "Galileo Galilei - in a nutshell" One of the sources: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NMM8vx9vDiE
The other source: http://www.biography.com/people/galileo-9305220
Galileo Galilei was an astronomer and scientist. Often considered the "father of modern science," he "laid the foundation" of our modern physics and astronomy. He was born on February 15th, 1564, in Pisa, Italy. He was one of the many "pioneers of the scientific method." Galileo started questioning Aristotle's point of view of the world. His idea had been that Earth was at the center of the universe. Galileo discovered that Aristotle had been wrong about everything in existence rotating around the Earth. He used a telescope that he had improved to look at Jupiter. He noticed four lights rotating around it. This showed that not everything went around the Earth. He also proved that two objects of different mass fall at the same rate of acceleration. He put this theory to the test, and it is believed that he dropped two large metal balls from the top of "The Leaning Tower of Pisa." Galileo also showed that a falling object's speed depends on the distance of the fall. Aristotle originally said that a falling object's speed remains constant. Galileo looked at the moon through a telescope, and saw the craters on the surface. This went against Aristotle's belief in the "metaphysical" law of the heavens. This helped Galileo conclude that the laws of physics are equal throughout the universe. His discoveries "confirmed the Heliocentric Model" that was first developed by a polish astronomer, Nicolaus Copernicus. This Model argued that the Sun never rises or sets, but it is the Earth that is rotating the Sun and spinning all the while. Throughout his life, he had published a number of writings. Galileo failed to get the Catholic Church to agree with his finding and accept that the Heliocentric Model did not oppose the Bible. The Church stopped the publishing of his books. He was sentenced to house arrest for the last years of his life, and only was unable to publish any more books. The ban on uncensored books he wrote was lifted in 1835, which unfortunately was almost 200 years after his death. Many historians still consider him the father of modern physics.

Galileo has affected today's society in many ways. He has opened the minds of many people, including me, and most certainly left a chain reaction. His inventions started the ripple that would soon lead to today's modern technology, such as the digital clock, and the GPS. His improvements to the telescope lead to the discovery of the Sun being at the center of the Solar System, and that lead to much more. Galileo Galilei has affected society by questioning the unquestionable, and looking to the stars.
