The goal of the meeting is to discuss people's expectations, hopes and plans for this particular TWG; possible applications for WPs in preparation; as well as the proposed seminar that Jan and I plan to offer in Winter 2025 (January 7-March 31, 2025), hopefully, with your cooperation.  

With respect to the seminar, for which we are yet to come up with a precise title, please come with some thoughts on how the concept of Eurasia has been used in the historiography in your field. We are particularly interested in the tension between different historical discourses on Eurasianism and the recent popularity of the term "Eurasia" in global history (along with the "toolkit" that it comes with, like "Persianate," "Islamicate," "Mongol Commonwealth," "Post-Mongol," etc). Jan and I will present some general ideas about how we could structure the course, but your input will be essential. As a helpful reading to think with, we suggest Steven Kotkin's article, which is attached.

The school draws on extensive previous research into Contemporary Hasidic Yiddish and on the experience of native speaker teachers who grew up immersed in a Hasidic Yiddish speaking cultural environment. Traditional categories essential to cataloguing and describing objects (such as date, maker, and geographic origin) are opposed to the layered processes of creation, circulation, and reinterpretation that characterize much EurAsian material culture in central European collections. Museum labels pinpoint where and when objects were “made.” A methodology grounded in material histories shifts the emphasis to multiple sites of creation and adaptive reuse. These questions open new spatial and temporal contexts for objects, placing them more firmly in local and global circuits. The goal of this workshop is to bring these material entanglements to the surface and develop concrete measures that make them more visible to both scholars and the general public. To do so, the workshop brings together a group of international experts to present cutting edge research and explore new avenues for scholarship, teaching, and outreach that place Eurasian materials at the center of thinking about central European collections. 

The focus will be on the use and adaptation of raw materials (such as metals, minerals, bones, nutshells) to explore deep object biographies. The workshop will look closely at well-known EurAsian resources like lapis lazuli (Lake Baika and in the Kokcha River valley), ruby (Central and Southeast Asia), nephrite (most famously from Hotan), diamonds (Indian subcontinent), citrine (Ural Mountains), and coconut (Indo-Pacific). Workshop participants will also focus on less-studied materials such as chalcedony, aurochs’ horn, jasper, agate, rock crystal, amethyst, sardonyx, diamonds, heliotrope, and garnet. 

The workshop will include academic papers as well as a tour of the collections at Schloss Ambras, and a brainstorming session on outreach (focused on floating ideas for revising labels, creating digital tours for existing platforms, educational programming, ideas for the development of educational materials to be sold at gift shops). The workshop is funded by our FWF Cluster of Excellence in EurAsian Transformations and we have funding to cover the cost of travel and accommodations for a limited group of participants.

Introduction to Hittite 1: Grammar

This course introduces the grammar of the Hittite language. The course is conducted in lecture format with assignments of grammatical exercises based on short text passages. The students will also be introduced to the Hittite cuneiform syllabary and the main research tools of Hittitology.

Introduction to Hittite 2: Reading

Building on the course Introduction to Hittite I, this course introduces the students to their first extended readings in Hittite. Students will read assigned passages from the Annals of Muršili II in both transliteration and cuneiform handcopy. Emphasis will be placed on mastering the grammar presented in the first course. Goals of this course include gaining greater proficiency in Hittite through reading authentic texts in the original language. Texts will cover a wide range of topics and genres, dating from different periods, e.g. hagiographies, chronicles, and poetry, along with (potentially) magical and scientific texts.

We’re having a meetup! There are lots of people doing Caucasus studies across the different Vienna academic institutions and beyond, and it would be good if we were able to network more, so as the Caucasus Studies group of the Academy’s Institute for Iranian Studies we’re organising a first summer picnic to help foster connections and see what else we can build together. We look forward to seeing you there!

Where: Meet at Donaustadtbrucke U2 station at 15:00. If you’re likely to come later and don’t already know people who are going, please email in advance and we’ll give you a contact number to call on the day to find us in the nearby area.

I am writing to warmly invite you to join us for the international workshop “Religious Institutions and Coerced Labour Regimes in Eurasia”, which Michael Jursa and I are organising within the framework of the FWF Cluster of Excellence EurAsian Transformations. The workshop will take place on 25–26 February 2026 at the Wiener Hofburg (Schreyvogelsaal).

Over the course of two days, we will bring together scholars working on different parts of Eurasia and across a wide chronological spectrum to discuss how religious institutions—temples, monasteries, shrines, endowments—have mobilised, justified, and structured forms of dependent and coerced labour. By combining microhistorical perspectives on lived experiences of work and obligation with analyses of religious, legal, and moral discourses, the workshop aims to foster a genuinely comparative conversation on coercion, consent, devotion, and power.

For members of Research Node 1 (“Geographies of Power”), we very much hope that these two days will be more than a workshop in the narrow sense. We would like them to become an opportunity for exchange, discussion, and an open “ideas marketplace” for possible future collaborations—across periods, regions, and methodological approaches. The workshop is closely aligned with the core questions of Node 1 and Cluster 2, but it also speaks to broader interests within the Cluster as a whole.

We are particularly pleased that a group of internationally renowned speakers from across the world will be with us in Vienna, creating a setting that is both intellectually stimulating and deliberately informal enough to encourage conversation beyond individual papers.

Even if you cannot attend the entire workshop, you are very welcome to join us for individual sessions, discussions, or simply to be part of the collective exchange. We would be delighted to see many of you there and to use this occasion to think together about shared questions, overlaps, and future directions.

IDENTITY NEGOTIATION AND ETHNIC DIVERSITY IN THE ANCIENT WORLD

Call for Papers – Deadline: 31st March 2026

Ethnic diversity was a fundamental aspect of the ancient world, where the presence, migration, and interaction of peoples characterised by distinct ethnic identities shaped societies from West to East. These interactions frequently resulted in coexistence, hybridisation, resistance, inclusion, as well as exclusion, depending on shifting social, political and cultural conditions. Contact between different habits and customs, as well as the exchanges among various codes of values and linguistic systems, gave rise to a new identitarian consciousness.

This conference examines the dynamics of identity negotiation in multi-ethnic contexts across ancient Eurasian societies, including – but not limited to – those of Egypt, the Greco-Roman world, the Germanic frontier, India, and China. It aims to investigate how societies created, imposed, contested, or modified categories of belonging and otherness, considered not as reflections of a single cultural model but as historically situated and unstable constructions.

This conference departs from traditional approaches that treat these worlds as separate historical universes. Instead, we examine how parallel and interconnected processes of ethnic identity negotiation operated across Eurasian societies. By bringing these contexts into dialogue, we ask: Do imperial systems (Roman, Chinese) deploy similar discourses of 'barbarism', and how do their chroniclers encode or question such categories? How do colonial contexts reproduce, challenge, or generate alternative models of multiethnicity? These questions frame our investigation into how normative frameworks, religious customs, political institutions, myths, memories, historiographies, and genealogies shaped — and were contested by — diverse communities across ancient Eurasia.

Through the observation of case studies from various languages, regions, and disciplines, the conference aims to shed light on the complex, often unstable processes through which identities were forged in antiquity, whether under the shadow of Western Eagles or Eastern Dragons, symbols of imperial authority across both ends of the ancient world.

Thematic Axes

Below is a list of potential thematic axes to explore during the conference, while remaining open to further developments:

1. Contested Boundaries and Institutional Exclusion

How did normative frameworks of citizenship construct and police ethnic boundaries? What mechanisms of inclusion and exclusion did institutions deploy, and how were these boundaries transgressed, renegotiated, or destabilised by subordinated groups and borderline figures?

2. Margins and Minorities: Foreigners, Stigma, and Social Exclusion

What strategies of containment, tolerance, or assimilation were deployed by dominant groups, and how did marginalised communities resist, subvert, or strategically conform to these frameworks?

3. Politics of Memory and Genealogies: Competing Narratives of the Past

How did different communities and social groups within multi-ethnic societies construct competing, contradictory narratives of their past? How did colonised, enslaved, or subordinated populations contest and rewrite ethnic mythologies? What silences and erasures characterised ancient historiography's treatment of non-dominant groups?

4. Entangled Worlds: Cultural Exchange and Hybrid Identities

What new forms of linguistic, religious, legal, or symbolic expression emerged from contact zones between East and West, between established powers and emerging identities? How did multilingualism, code-switching, and linguistic hybridity shape new forms of ethnic consciousness? How did communities navigate competing systems of communication and meaning-making?

5. Transgressing Hierarchies: How Foreign and Marginal Elites Negotiated Power

How did individuals and groups marked as 'foreign' or 'barbarian' navigate, appropriate, and contest structures of power? How did they renegotiate their ethnic identity through access to authority, and how did established elites respond to this mobility? What limits and precarity characterised the power of foreign-origin elites?

Disciplinary Fields and Interpretive Approaches

The conference will focus primarily on the following fields, while remaining open to other approaches: Greek and Roman history; Greek and Latin language and literature; Classical philology and Byzantine philology; Egyptology and Coptic civilisation; Germanic philology; History, religions, and philosophies of South and Central Asia; Indology and Tibetology, Languages and literatures of China and Southeast Asia.

The conference explicitly moves beyond all binary oppositions – "center/periphery," "civilised/uncivilised," "insiders/outsiders," "male/female" – to explore the fluidity and constant renegotiation of ethnic, cultural, political, and gendered boundaries in ancient Eurasia.

Date and Venue of the Conference

The conference will take place from 17th to 19th September 2026 at the Department of Literature, Languages, and Cultural Heritage of the University of Cagliari (Campus Sa Duchessa, Via Is Mirrionis

1, 09123 Cagliari, Italy).

Selected speakers are expected to present in person, while participation via remote connection will be allowed only under exceptional circumstances, to be indicated at the time of proposal submission. The audience will also be able to follow the sessions online via MS Teams.

Submission of Proposals

Proposals are invited from researchers at all career stages, with special encouragement for early-career scholars, including PhD students and postdoctoral researchers. Contribution proposals should be sent to between.eagles.and.dragons@gmail.com by 31st March 2026.

The file (in .pdf format) should include an anonymous abstract of no more than 500 words and a reference bibliography. A brief biographical note, accompanied by the title of the proposal, should be submitted in a separate file. Each paper (in Italian or English) should last 20 minutes.

The Scientific Committee will evaluate the proposals and announce the selection by the end of April.

Contributions will be published, subject to double-blind peer review.

Having hit the ground running, the JEARN is excited to keep up the momentum, and we are issuing a Call for Papers for our 4th Workshop, scheduled for March 13-14 at the ÖAW campus! Led this time by our colleauge Dr Dominik Haas, the theme is 'Working with Texts", and we will be exploring our shared problematic of working with textual evidence under imperfect conditions. Rather than focusing on specific objects, periods, or results, the workshop will foreground methods, practices, and problems of text-based scholarship in a broad sense. Contributors are invited to reflect on the concrete conditions of their research:

• What does "philology" or "textual criticism" mean in their discipline?

• What counts as a text, a source, or an edition?

• Which challenges are central – fragmentary corpora, translation layers, manuscript variance, theoretical constraints, or uneven access to resources – and how are these addressed in practice?

• What do scholars aim to achieve through their work, and how are these aims secured

through concrete methodological choices?

Claude Chevaleyre's guest residency is coming to an end. Claude Chevaleyre (ENS Lyon/CNRS Paris) was a visiting professor at our Cluster for three months, participated in departments' activities at the faculties of historical and cultural and of historical and philological studies of the University of Vienna and taught classes on Chinese history and historiography in the Viennese MA programmes in ‘Global History & Global Studies’.

This lecture series explores musical cultures across the Ottoman Empire, the Republic of Turkey, Iran, and Central Asia, examining these regions as interconnected soundscapes shaped by mobility, devotional practices, and political transformations. Drawing on current work in ethnomusicology, sound studies, and historical musicology, the series highlights diverse traditions, ranging from Islamic recitation and liturgy to Armenian liturgical and choral music, shared Turkish–Armenia folk repertoires, and the courtly, urban, and Sufi musical cultures of the Turko-Iranian world. Further contributions address the historical and contemporary study of Ottoman music (including recent advances in the Corpus Musicae Ottomanicae), the musical traditions of Badakhshan and northern Afghanistan, Central Asian art music such as Shashmaqam, and modern genres from popular music to heavy metal in Turkey. The program also includes perspectives on musical life in Qajar and Pahlavi Iran.

Complementing the lectures, the series will feature a concert offering direct engagement with selected repertoires.

Hans-Lukas Kieser and Yavuz Köse introduce the section with a critical reassessment of Rıza Nur as surgeon, minister, and race historian, drawing particular attention to his unpublished writings. In a subsequent article, Hans-Lukas Kieser further analyzes Rıza Nur’s intellectual and political profile within the context of the early Turkish Republic. Hülya Çelik focuses on Rıza Nur’s literary—and especially poetic—output. She undertakes a content-based and comparative analysis of selected poems, tracing the development of his poetry in relation to his writings on Ottoman, Turkish, and French literature. Petr Kučera examines Rıza Nur’s literary production through a critical reading of his unpublished novel Paçi ile Ançi, highlighting themes of moral and societal decline, sexual excess, greed, corruption, shifting gender relations, and an “alternative” interpretation of late Ottoman history. Yavuz Köse’s article introduces and critically examines Ermeni Tarihi (“History of the Armenians”), written by Rıza Nur between 1914 and 1923 and preserved in the Berlin State Library. Ellinor Morack also addresses Ermeni Tarihi, examining the work as an early example of post-genocidal anti-Armenian discourse in post-Ottoman Turkey. Together, these studies offer new perspectives on a complex and often controversial figure in the intellectual and political history of the late Ottoman Empire and the early Turkish Republic.

The conference responds to a significant gap in petrofiction scholarship, which remains dominated by Anglophone contexts. With the seventh funding call now open, we would like to explore interest within the Cluster of Excellence EurAsian Transformations in contributing to a lecture series provisionally titled “Tasting EurAsia,” planned for the winter semester 2026/27.

The series is intended to bring together perspectives on food and drink cultures across Eurasia, with a focus on their historical development, circulation, and social, religious, or political significance.

In addition, we are planning a two-day workshop centred on historical recipes from manuscripts and printed sources. The workshop will combine discussion and analysis with a practical component, culminating in a collective cooking session based on selected recipes.

We would be very pleased to hear from colleagues who might be interested in contributing to the lecture series and/or taking part in the workshop. A brief indication of your interest and possible topic would be most welcome.

A fictional conversation about epidemics from South Asia, probably composed around 150 CE, which, among other peculiarities, contains surprising similarities to a text from the Hippocratic corpus.

In April of this year, we held an exciting cluster-funded conference on the topic of 'Oil and Empire', focusing on Galicia, in Vienna and Krakow. Building on this, we are planning a lecture series for the upcoming winter semester in Vienna and Innsbruck, which will expand this theme to other regions of Eurasia and discuss it in greater depth. If anyone is interested in participating by giving a lecture, we would very much appreciate it. Topics related to the Middle and Far East of Asia would be particularly welcome!

THE USABLE PAST OF BYZANTIUM: NARRATIVES OF EMPIRE IN THE HISTORIOGRAPHIES OF SOUTHEASTERN EUROPE

Diana Mishkova will talk about her book, Rival Byzantiums: Empire and Identity in South-eastern Europe (CUP 2023), which explores how the “national historians” of the modern Balkan “successor states” to the empire – Greece, Bulgaria, Serbia, Romania and Turkey – have operated with the topos of Byzantium and how, in doing so, they have been shaping the national canons of history in these countries from the Enlightenment to the present day. All this means divulging the national stakes of Byzantine studies, how it partakes in changing the understanding and writing of history, national history in particular. Her approach to this theme, therefore, concerns the mirrored reflections, not the “historical reality” of Byzantium. These reflections are also historical facts, but they belong less to the history of the Byzantine empire than to that of modern historiography. In this sense the lecture should be seen as, on the one hand, an exploration of the politics of Byzantine studies– of the images, perceptions and understandings this field has been cultivating during the last two and a half centuries – and, on the other, a critical interrogation of “Byzantium” as a historiographical construct with considerable ideological potential in shaping national history and national identity.

Diana Mishkova has specialized in modern and contemporary history of Southeastern Europe. Having taught at the History Department of Sofia University and a number of European and US universities, since 2000 she has been the director of the Centre for Advanced Study in Sofia. Her recent publications include Beyond Balkanism. The Scholarly Politics of Region Making (Routledge, 2018) and Rival Byzantiums: Empire and Identity in Southeastern Europe(Cambridge University Press, 2022). She is the editor of ten international volumes and collective monographs, among them Balkan Historiographical Wars (Palgrave Macmillan, 2025), European Regions and Boundaries. A Conceptual History (Berghahn Books, 2017), ‘Regimes of Historicity’ in Southeastern and Northern Europe, 1890-1945 (Palgrave-Macmillan, 2014); Entangled Histories of the Balkans, vols.2 and 4 (Brill, 2014, 2017). Foreign Corresponding Member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, Doctor Honoris Causa of Södertörn University, Stockholm, Sweden, holder of the “Danubius Award” (2022) and the “Konstantin Jireček Medal” (2023), and member of the Scientific Advisory Board of our Cluster of Excellence.

This lecture explores the emergence of early haṭhayogic practices within the Vajrayāna Buddhist milieu of medieval India and Tibet.

It examines how subtle-body physiology, the control and sublimation of bindu, and alchemical models of inner transformation provided the conceptual framework for the development of dynamic yogic techniques later associated with haṭhayoga.

Giacomella Orofino is Professor of Tibetan Studies at the University of Naples “L’Orientale”. Her research focuses on Vajrayāna Buddhism, the Kālacakra tradition, Indo-Tibetan tantric literature, and the early history of haṭhayoga.

"Dividing OM, Shaping Mantra Systems"

The division of the sacred syllable "om" into the three sounds, a, u, and m is one of the most enduring ideas in mantra culture. Originating in Vedic thought, dividing OM offers a fertile framework for the development of mantra systems in premodern India. This talk shows how successive phases of religious thought adapted this idea to suit their own mantras and contexts, from Vedic recitation to Brahmanical dharma, from Purāṇic devotion to Yogic silence, from Śaiva resonance to Jaina karma. The division of the sacred syllable at once shapes and reflects the traditions which claim it: OM is the bedrock of mantra systems and their essential, most dynamic expression.

Now, we want to present our travels to you, as many of the participants were sponsored by the CoE and cordially invite you to the Cluster event Workshop: China - The Cluster Expedition to the Tarim Basin.
