Self- reliance is essentially not conforming to  society "These are the voices which we hear in solitude..." Emerson places this in his article  referring to the "words" or thoughts in ones mind like a personal opinion. In this Hortons essential voices or ideas in his head would be the little people he finds on top of a dandelion."society everywhere is in conspiracy against the manhood of everyone of its members." Emorson is saying that people constantly get judged for there choices when they announce and show the world their creativity. This can relate to horton when his friends and people of his town begin bullying him and calling him crazy."...but they grow faint and inaudible as we enter into the world...." As someone becomes conformed to society their own beliefs and opinions begin to change, as did Hortons when at the end he could no longer hear the people on top of the dandelion. Emerson's main idea is to allow yourself to have an opinion no matter what society thinks. McCandless lived the picture perfect life however he choose to leave his home to venture out into the unknown on his own. Although everyone knew an expedition with one backpack would fail he continued his journey with nothing more and nothing less.
