Thoughts on my research

- I had never considered the implications of other aspects of the English language on math, such as the double meaning of many words and how confusing that would be to young ELLs who are just beginning to learn English. For example, the word table. Most ELL students who have just begun learning English will know this to be the piece of furniture they work or eat at, while in math, it is a type of chart.
- Through my research, my opinions regarding the challenges of teaching a subject like math to ELL beginners has been confirmed. It poses a lot of challenges, first and most predominant being that even though math is a universal language, the Ontario curriculum is very language based. Beginner ELL students would benefit most from learning math through hands on activities and with manipulatives, while also learning the terminology.

- some of the best strategies to support beginner ELL students in math:
*using pictures and flashcards to explain basic concepts
*gesturing and repitition
*interactive math notebooks
*creating a picture dictionary/ online dictionary
*building student confidence using basic math skills they are good at, like addition/subtraction facts. Also using these simple concepts as a basis for explaining more complex ones
*explain discrepancies in language to students as they learn words (i.e.: volume, table, range, prime, etc.)
