This unit will revolve around the ideas of perseverance and acceptance. There may also be talk of abuse and neglect due to some of the stories that are included in the text set which are also important ideas to talk about but are not ones that will be focused on in this unit. I find that many children can be sadly faced with these problems and sometimes do not know how to handle it or they can feel alone. I know these can be difficult topics to handle but I feel they are very important topics for children to need to get their head around.

Students will choose from a list of people who have been disabled since childhood that I have prepared for them in advance. Over two weeks they will research this person, especially their childhood, and choose at least three books from the catalogue (not including The War That Saved My Life) to read and connect to their research on the famous person. In a two to three-page paper they will write about perseverance and acceptance while being disabled and how the events in the books connect with the real-life events of the person they researched. They will be sure to explain how these connections show that the disabled person accepted their disability and persevered through it. Lastly, I will have them write how they would act with the same disability and why. A rubric will be provided to them.

I will provide each student with a composition notebook where they will prepare a journal of entries that they will make each day after their assigned readings of The War That Saved My Life. Each day, for homework, they will write a journal entry of at least one-half page in which they discuss how they felt while reading the chapters that night and what made them feel that way using specific moments from the readings. On Mondays and Wednesdays their entries will be no less than one page and must include a connection to another book within the catalogue in which they explore one theme of the chapters they read that night. They are only allowed to use a book one time in their journal meaning they should be using at least either different books from the catalogue. During these days they will also include their feelings and why they felt the way they did just like in the other entries. I will be looking at their journals on their desk at the beginning of class each day to make sure they are doing it.

What the Students Can Use in Each Unit Half

Students will be given the whole list of books in the beginning of the unit and will have the ability to use any book for any activity (unless otherwise stated). While the books in each unit half are directed to that half, that does not mean that if the student can find a way to use a book from the first half unit in the second half or the other way around, that they would not be able to do that. I just do not want them to constantly use the same book over and over again.
