Billy Collins shows the reader what poetry really means in this poem and even his diction shows this because he purposely uses the words and forms of figurative language to show the reader what the poem means. A quote from the poem that supports the claim stated is, “Drop a mouse into a poem and watch him probe his way out.” (Collins, lines 5 and 6). This quote shows how the reader doesn’t understand the poem because to probe means to explore something and when the mouse is in the poem the mouse is probably struggling to figure out how to get out of the poem. This quote is figuratively speaking about the reader because the reader usually struggles with figuring out what the poem really means. Another piece of evidence that supports the claim is, “Walk inside the poem’s room and feel the walls for a light switch.” (Collins, lines 7 and 8). This quote is a great example of Billy Collins showing the reader that he wants them to truly understand any poem because when you walk into a completely pitch black room you can’t understand what you are touching, where you are, or what the room is like. This is a great metaphor because of how it allows the reader to imagine this and then once they flick that switch they truly comprehend everything about the room just like finally understanding what a poem means. I picked this image because I like to imagine myself as the mouse because I feel like the mouse would struggle to find his way out and its kind of like how at first I was struggling to figure out the true meaning of the poem like the mouse in a maze. When he says to hold the poem up to the light it's a great way to explain to the reader what the poem really means and how to reveal the true meaning of the poem because he is pretty much telling the reader that they don't actually comprehend the poem. I picked this song because of the fact that it tells a story and even the music video is a story.
