Introduction - SOAPS

The speaker of the song is Khalid, this song is occurring in high school. After researching the song, it was wrote to a girl as the audience, he likes her but doesn't want to commit. Although he has a intended audience to himself others could take it in differently. The audience could be young kids in general living life to the fullest. The purpose of this song is to tell a girl he likes her but he is still young and has more love to give other than just her. The subject of this song is just being a young person living life to the fullest. The tone is upbeat and really easy to understand.

THESIS for analysis

Khalid acting as the speaker attempts to tell a girl that he has love to give but there is no need for a romantic relationship because he said everyone has a chance for love. Being young, dumb, and broke is just showing that they are young and have lots more love to give. They use the appeals of logos and pathos in the lyrics and the appeals of logos and ethos in the video to get this message across. In analyzing the video it appears that their use of appeals is effective in convincing teens and young adults.

Lyrics Analysis - Logos

Logos started at the start of the song, states two lines "I'm so high at the moment/ I`m so caught up in this." This uses logos to show he is high on life and he has more love to give, being young you have much more life to share. Another logos line would be "young dumb and broke high school kids." Which is saying when someone is in high school they often make dumb choices. But being so young you are allowed to, logically people are more lenient because you are young. Everyone makes choices that are dumb and you experience this in high school more often because they don't know the consequences yet. My third example for logos would be the lyrics "but we still got love to give/ while were young dumb" this is pretty much saying that they are still young they have more love to give. This is logos because its logic that since they are still young they have a whole life to give love out.

Lyrics Analysis - Pathos

The first two lines of the song starts out with pathos saying "I know your still thinking of me/just like i know you should." This is pathos because his emotion hoping and knowing that the girl is still thinking of him. Another pathos would be, "What`s fun about commitment?/ When we have a life to live." This is pathos because commitment it can be hard on emotions by committing to one thing for the rest of your life. My next example of logos would be the line "we argue all the time" this is showing that the relationship is too hard on him because they argue a lot. He could be saying he wants out because there are plenty of fish in the sea and they might not be right for each other.

For pathos I used the example of the teacher talking over the microphone. This is pathos because it can be scary for many student to leave high school and grow up. My other example are friends talking, this is pathos because it is happy memories that they will remember forever.

Overall the song and music video are effective. Many kids and teens listen to this song, it is very popular. Khalid did good at getting his point across throughout the lyrics. He explains why kids are young dumb and broke and that is why teens love this song so much is because they can relate.
