If someone is absent, which is rare, others fill in and take over their work so students are still assisted timely and no one falls behind. The team also shares their knowledge with other student service areas and will walk with students to assist them to get their questions answered if they believe the student may be frustrated. Voters need to ask themselves, has the Student Accounting team ever let me down, have they ever said "no" we cannot do that or do they go out of their way to help solve your issues?

Unsung Hero Award Nomination: Lily Cava

It is with deep respect and admiration that I nominate Lily Cava for the Unsung Hero Award. For over 31 years, Lily has been a quiet but powerful force within the district, dedicating herself selflessly to the success of students, the well-being of colleagues, and the spirit of community on our campus.

Lily’s service began as an hourly employee and evolved into a decades-long commitment marked by care, creativity, and compassion. She is perhaps best known for her remarkable gift baskets—each hand-crafted with artistic detail, personal care, and a financial contribution from her own pocket. For years, Lily has made approximately 100 custom-designed gift baskets annually for various occasions, spending $15–$20 of her own money, adding to what depts give her, on each one to ensure they are meaningful and special. These baskets, expressions of her generosity and artistry, have become a treasured tradition that lifts the spirits of students and staff alike.

In 2017, Lily established the Cava Scholarship, a deeply personal initiative inspired by her own journey as a first-generation college student. The scholarship awards $500 each to two students annually targeting middle-income, first-generation students who often fall through the cracks of federal assistance programs. This initiative stands as a testament to Lily’s enduring commitment to equity and student success, and to her desire to give back in the same way she was once supported after immigrating to the U.S. at age 20.

While working for the district, Lily earned her associate degree from SDCCD and later completed her bachelor’s degree in liberal arts from California State University San Marcos—an inspiring example of perseverance and lifelong learning.

Since 2012, Lily has been instrumental in helping various Miramar departments create heartfelt graduation gifts and tokens of appreciation, including gift boxes and cards. Her kindness extends to all corners of the campus—from buying toys for children in the Child Development Center during seasonal events like Halloween, to offering support during times of loss. She played a key role in assisting the family of the late Sam Shoostary, and helped create a Legacy Plaque in honor of Financial Aid’s Lonnie Phan—quietly supporting our community during some of its most difficult moments.

Lily Cava does not seek recognition. She simply shows up, gives, and uplifts. Her actions speak volumes, reflecting her deep love for this community and her belief in the power of education, generosity, and human connection.

For over two decades, Lily has exemplified everything we could hope for in a Miramar employee: compassion, dedication, creativity, and unwavering service. She is, without question, our unsung hero.

Marco is an Athletic Equipment Attendant who goes above and beyond for the athletic department and the college as a whole. He is always looking for ways to improve and to make each individual he crosses paths with feel welcomed. The details that go into his role could easily be overlooked without many noticing, but that does not stop him from making sure the work is completed to the highest standard. And with that, he often doesn't receive the praise he deserves. However, he doesn't do it for the praise. He constantly goes outside of responsibilities to help others in and out of the athletic department and his ultimate goal is always to make Miramar look better. Marco deserves this recognition!

What is written as the definition of Unsung Hero was written about Emily. As the primary lab technician in Microbiology for over a decade, has truly been instrumental in the success of our Microbiology courses and Allied Health program. She never complains, is always willing to step in and go the extra mile to diagnose issues and works tirelessly to keep all of our bacterial strains un-contaminated! She makes sure that her fellow lab techs are supported and have what they need to succeed. And she does this with a smile on her face. You may not see her around campus often, as she has a herculean task to maintain our microbiology labs, and she doesn't ask for recognition or fame, but for all these reasons she is truly deserving of this award.

If there were an award for "Most Effective Budget Terrorizer," Brett would win hands down. He expertly taught me exactly how much money I think I had, then promptly shattered that illusion by showing me everything I can’t spend it on. Over the years, he patiently pointed out every single way I managed to spend my budget incorrectly—because apparently, I’m a natural at creative financial mistakes.

Thanks to Brett’s endless reminders that our department basically didn't have any money, I now live in a constant state of budget-induced fear. I’m so scared to spend a dime that my budget has become a shrine to unspent funds (not really).

So here’s to Brett, the mentor who took my my spending confidence, and gave it a good shake, and somehow made me a wiser (if slightly more paranoid) spender. Truly, a mentor like no other!
