Johann Heinrich Schulze found out that when you expose silver salts to light, they darken. This is related to photography because people use silver salts in camera films. However, Schulze didn't realize that he could've used the silver salts to make pictures.

Thomas Wedgewood created sun pictures. He did this by treating leather with silver salts and placing leaves on the leather. However, he couldn't figure out how to keep his "picture" from darkening and his leaf "pictures" turned black. For photography, they had to find a way to keep a permanent image, and combine light-sensitive material with the camera obscura.

The camera obscura was the first ever photo-capture device, and it was written about by the Chinese, but first explained by Aristotle. It helped artists with their drawings, and even made some of them look "Camera-like". There is a pinhole, and that pinhole is the only light source. The light is refracted off of the pinhole to create an upside down projection. This projection is then traced by the artist. This made it easier to make pictures, instead of having to do the portrait freehand.
