The cast of the play was a diverse and unique group this was so that it showed the different perspective of Dan's story. The parents wanted the cast to show respect to the play and wanted to show the character as if it was Dan.The writer Mark wanted the cast to meet up with the parents so the cast felt the story from a personal level. The cast had met the parents in which they stated that it made them feel more a part of the play and to feel like Dan's friends and their exact emotions. The cast firstly read the script in just a book, words and letters however when they met Dan's real parents they felt as if there was more pressure for them to act exactly like Dan's friends and family. The cast felt as if they knew Dan when they heard the story from his parents in person ;they felt the exact emotions and they felt Dan's energy through acting. They felt the rave was the most difficult to perform the event as this was the moment that changed Dan's life forever as long with his entire family. This event is what caused his death therefore the cast had more pressure in order to show Dan's taking of the killer MDMA in a creative way.Tim ford who was Freelance consultant director gave the idea of the water bottles in the rave act.The bottles would light up showing the effects of the drugs to Dan and how it slowly decapitated and destroyed his life away by a single drug.It was a long process as it was the part that was the most important. It was the most difficult because it was the part where the cast had to act like they didn't know what was going o and they didn't know that Dan was going to die just 3 days away due to the drugs they were taking that day.

From the death of Dan; Dan's parents decided to set up a project where it would make young people and their families to be aware of drug use and how it can affect them.Their used their own son's story in order to prevent people from taking MDMA and other illegal drugs. His parents didn't want his death to go not recognised and unnoticed, they wanted his death to be the light in the darkness.A heart wrenching sad story that shocked many people to realise the grieving of his loved ones and the positive impact he made in peoples lives.Since Dan loved Drama they thought the idea of a play being written for him was an amazing idea to connect to the young people in a creative way. From the foundation the writer Mark Wheeler wanted to make a play about Dan to show the impact of a young innocent live can affect everyone with one single mistake.

Purpose of the play

The purpose of this play is to stop the influence of drugs and parties. Mark does this by showing the forever lasting effects of a teen taking drugs;either a broken family or a death of a loved one.Mark wanted to make this play because there is a massive controversy with the persona of drugs.Nowadays drugs are shown in music videos in social media and in teen parties. This is a huge issue as many more teenagers and influencers are dying at the stake of drugs. Taking drugs can also connect to mental health, some people would take drugs for a way to relive their pain and others would take to just fit in.Audience of 2018 would connect to the play with it more and connect with it in a personal level as the intake of drugs are rising. This play is also symbol of forgiving.Dan was just a normal teenage boy who unfortunately went the wrong route of live.In act 1 we can see how it affects his friends at school.one of his friends who went to the rave with him had said he felt it was his fault because he felt guilty letting Dan die and not protecting him.he also said he feels guilty that he shared Dan lasts moments with him when he was awake. In act 2 we see the forgiveness of his parents as they forgiven Dan that he had toke the drugs and resulted in him being in a coma. They explained how they should not look at the broke n side and negative side of Dan but instead the things he has accomplished in his life. They described him as being charming ,funny, caring and bright man.Even though this horrible death occurred in 2014 January, his parents saw his death as an opportunity to forgive the man;Nicqueel Pitrora, who was responsible for the drugs Dan took a supplied class A drug without knowing however his parents forgive and treated him like their won son after Dan's death as a way of closure. They used a negative event to a positive inspiration to make young kids like Dan see the effects of drugs and they managed to create a foundation for Dan and impact of drugs.

Key Themes/contextual influencer

The key themes of the play is the intake of drugs and the un-noticed peer pressure surrounding teen raves and social parties. The character Dan is shown to have peer pressure to have drugs and drink as he is only 16 and this modern area where teens mostly party and have drugs. When Dan moved to sixth form he started smoking and going to illegal raves. We as an audience can see that Dan hates smoking and the use of drug by him saying "smoking is bad, why would you do that?".His character suddenly changes when he starts to party with his friends and starts taking ecstasy (MDMA).His personality changes as he starts lying to his parents saying that he is going to a party with his friends however he went to a rave which resulted in his death.Another key theme is death. This play resolves around the death of Dan,Dan dies of an overdose .His death is seen in two perspectives in act 1 and act 2.In act 1 his friends view his death in disbelief as they don't see Dan as the drug type and describes him as a funny classmate. His friends see his drinking and drug use as a negative thing. In contrast in act 2 his family sees his death as a positive way forward and describe his life in a of learning from mistakes and sees his life as he is still alive. They also forgive the guy who(add name) laced the MDMA with extra amount.Another key theme would be to parents and pretending lying o be okay.Dan in act 2 was shown to have lied to his mother by saying he was just going to a friends party however that wasn't the case.If he would've told the truth then his parents could have prevented his drug use and death.Telling the truth is difficult now in modern days, this play represents this consistent theme as many teenagers repeat this and it eventually damages their life.

Roles and Responsibilities of Mark Wheeller/Cast

Mark Wheeler's role is to make sure the play presented and gave the correct message across to the young audience and their parents. The message was to tell young people the story of Dan's overdose in a positive light. The parents of Dan wanted to show Dan's life in a positive way not a overdose or a drug addiction. This message is supposed to raise awareness among-st the use of drugs and peer pressure and the ever lasting consequences with that. The role of the director would be that they would need to make sure the cast knows their lines so they can take the play seriously. Mark wheeler also directed so he had to make sure the cast knew where they would stand and what actions they would make to show the event and make it clear to the audience of whats going on for instance the cast would put on the blue jacket so the audience knew it was Dan.The writer which was Mark had to make sure that the script was agreed and confirmed with the parents so that what they were saying was real and was from the interview they did with the director. The writer also had to make the script interesting he did this by making into 2 acts so that it shows two different perspectives of the play and make the audience think. The role of the family and friends was that they needed to do an interview with the director which would be recorded so that Mark could use this real event and make it into a play. The friends were also included in this play;act 1. Every one of Dan's closest friends that talked to him before he passed away did an interview for this play to give their opinion on why he took the drugs and what exactly lead to his death. The role of the designers was to make the characters stand out so that the audience can tell who they are and the time era of the play. For the play the clothes was mostly black to show the mourning of Dan's death and to show that there doesn't need to be any fancy clothes since they are in school and the play doesn't resemble use of money or fancy lights but the use of techniques to show the meaning of the play. The set design is very basic to make it easier to understand. The play set has blocks to represent car and drugs that they take once the blocks turn a different color it presents the drug taking and emotions. The use of crazy colors represent the party and rave. The role of the cast is to take their job seriously and carefully since they are playing a real life person;there is a difference playing a made up character and a real life person so every single action an. movement needs to be like that person from the interview. Mark also had to make sure the play was mature and responsible enough to show since this was a true story and the whole cast would need to make sure to be sensible and respectful.Mark's responsibility is to present the play in a way a group of people would connect with it in this case it would be teenagers this is due to the fact majority of his plays have teenagers playing the older roles.Another responsibility is to create a script where its easy to read and understand and in his case the lines in the play would need to be similar to the words the family and friends said in the viewpoint. He would need to be creative with the way he writes in order to intrigue the audience, in his case he used 2 acts which consisted with 2 view points of the death of Daniel. He used different cast members to play Dan,this shows his uniqueness and a clever way to show different sides of Dan by having different people playing it ,its as if having personalities of Dan that people knew him by.

Acting style

The acting style of 'I love you Mom i promise i won't die' is physical theatre acting and educational. The physical; acting includes acting with objects and using props to represent events.Such as in the play the actors use blocks to represent the car, the classroom with the students sitting on them. The colorful lights on the blocs represent the raves and the illegal drugs which they took. In addition the play also includes the use of clothing to represent Dan.Dan was known to frequently worn the blue jacket that every one knew him by,Each actor took the role of Dan and the way the audience knew this was the blue jacket. They also use presentation and music to add effect to the acts and Dan's family and friends photos of him which added more emotion to the play. The presentation helped set the scene for example in the rave the presentation showed a party and drugs. The music was dub-step and the lights added more suspense. The use of the real pictures of Dan with his friends and videos of him as a kid made it very sincerer and more heartfelt because it made the audience feel like they knew him and have sympathy/remorse for the family.

Mark Wheeller is one of the most successful playwrights in Britain. He started writing songs in school but they were not popular so he started writing plays such as missing Dan Nolan which is about a missing person case ,too much punch for Judy a women who killed her sister by drink driving and chicken who is about a boy who got ran over. All of his plays are shown by young people. All of his plays are a challenging subject matter that make the audience think about the message and hopefully have a positive look on the subject.Mark never took a training on drama however he managed to be named one of the well known drama playwrights along with Shakespeare which is a very well known playwright among-st GCSE. Mark makes his plays very thought provoking as they include controversial topics such as drugs and eating disorders which is not common. For the play i love you mom includes the parents and friends exact words from interviews.Mark Wheeler had heard from the Drama teacher at Dan's school who recommend him to Dan's parents that he would make a play about Dan's story. He had a conversation over the phone with the parents discussing what he wanted to do with this play which was to make young people aware of drugs. The parents wanted to present Dan in a positive light which Mark respected so that Teens who saw/read the play saw this sad horrible death as a way to overcome the use of drugs. He thought the best way to present this topic was to use the of the parents and friends exact words to create sympathy and connection with the audience.Mark wanted to make the play available to everyone so that everyone could feel a part of it and not left out if it was too expensive.

This play is about a 16 year old boy in sixth form who overdosed on MDMA in a rave and died in hospital as in a result of the high amount of drug. Dan persuaded his parents on Friday 17th of january to go to a party with his freinds, his mom trsuted him however he went to an illegal rave wihtout her authority. He then took a lthal amount of MDMA wihtout his consent whihc caused him to go into a coma.In the morning the police went to his parents house and gave them the horrble news that Dan was ina coma .The hostipal and family did everything they could to save however this was Dan'sfate. On January 20th Dan was pronounced dead surrounded by his loved ones. The play resolves around his friends' personal experience with the night Dan went to the party and overdosed(act 1).In act 2 it shows Dan's Mom Fiona and Dad Tim and his brother Jacob with their feelings and memories of Dan whilst he was in hospital. In act 2 it also shows the view point of Dan's girlfriend since she was a part of his personal life since she didn't go to the raves and didn't party. This showed a new perspective to his life without the drugs and fitting in.We saw the 'raw side'of Dan,we saw who he truly was without the teenage troubled life.He was a bright , funny, caring ,heart warming person. This play is written from a true story and precise words of the family. This was done be Mark Wheeler who wrote the play,he had used a recorder to record the family and friends precise words and still included the interview that he had done with the use of the narrator representing him interviewing them.
