This phrase is used in a negative and positive way by Raven because in the beginning, she is saying how she is a fake big sister to Mercy. What she means is that she is not actually her sister, but she acts like one towards her because she really cares for her. But, the next time she says it, she is saying that she hasn't been much of a big sister to Brooke because they never really got to know each other. The author had Raven say this because she wanted to express how Raven felt about not having Brooke in her life. She went through a lot of troubles with people bullying her because of the color of her skin and her accent. People "label" her and segregate her based on these things. They don't physically label her with paper and writing but they call her names and kind of push her off to the side just because she is different and unique. This added an interesting element to the story because it interests the reader into knowing more about the way she was "labeled" by other people. Connotation: Talkative, social, sophisticated, proper
I think that this is more of a neutral connotation. I don't think that it is negative or positive. This is because Hazel is just describing the way that her friend acts. I think that Hazel used these words to tell the reader that this girl lives in Indiana but she has a very proper British accent, which doesn't make much sense. This word choice helps the reader understand more about Hazel's friend Kaitlyn. It tells the reader the way that Kaitlyn acts and speaks by saying that she acts like a British socialite, even though she is not.

This is neither a positive nor a negative connotation. It is just a word that the author used to describe the test that everyone has to take when they turn 16. This test is specific to a person and tells them what they have a natural ability for. Adding this test to the book was essential because it showed that Tris is Divergent. This helped the reader better understand Tris's character. She never felt like she fit in anywhere. This is more of a negative connotation. I know this because the simulations that are used in the tests can be dangerous. You have to figure out a way to get out of it on your own. The author included this in the story to show that Tris had a confusing outcome to the simulations. Instead of doing the same thing in all the different simulations, she did things that people from all the factions would do. Divergent is a negative connotation in the beginning of the book. When Tris takes her aptitude test, she finds out that she is Divergent. Tori, Tris's test administrator tells her that being Divergent is very rare and dangerous and that she should never tell anyone. When it came time for Tris to choose what faction she wanted to spend the rest her life in, she could have picked any of them because she fit in with a little bit of all of them. When Tris chooses Dauntless, she knows that if anyone there found out she was Divergent, they would kill her. The author chose to make Tris divergent because she is the main character and she is the one telling the story.
