 “Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them that despitefully use you” (King 281).
In this example of allusion, Dr. King uses the bible to reflect his logic towards the clergyman and this would make his audience empathize to keep loving people, even though they are mistreating you. Rather than just spreading hate.

For instance, Dr. King uses rhetorical questions after using multiple famous historical figures that were extremists for social change against discrimination and were right. This makes his audience question if they want to continue to spread justice or continue to be injustice.

Dr. King uses the phrases “Was not Jesus an extremist for love...Was not Amos an extremist for justice...Was not Paul an extremist for the Christian gospel” which he is trying to emphasize an idea and stir the listener's emotion. The idea he is trying to emphasize is that him mentioning these people that were extremist were known for making a change for the right things.King wanted people of color to be treated right.He wanted whites to see the change he was trying to make, but he knew that they wouldn’t and them seeing he was making an impact they would try and make him stop. These parallel phrases evoke emotions: by making people realise that if these people can make a change for the better, king can too.
