They have the authority to make decisions that can change the game monumentally. They are given the power by big competition events such as The Australian Open. An example of the process the umpire's go through are how reliable they are through various background checks and how quick they make decisions. Furthermore, by providing evidence of the statistical data from the performance of previous events, the tennis umpires are chosen on how highly regarded they are. However, as they do it hold any statute authority they can only control the power given to them in their own jurisdiction. They have power and authority when making decisions on the results of the game, for example, they can determine whether the ball was in the court or not.

Teachers within any school district are an example of 'informal policing'. Through their role they do act upon their title as being someone higher than students. For example ; teachers have the power to fail a student in any exam/assignments. Teachers also have responsibilities to care and nurture each student as it is their priorities as their role of occupation. Principals are also an example of 'informal policing' as they are apart of applying rules to their school district towards teachers and students. They are to ensure that their schools are in good condition and that students and teachers are well looked after. They are also able to make consequences/punishments for any wrong doings etc.

Soccer officials are able to control the game and set rules upon the players involved. Without referees, the game would be corrupt and most likely filled with illegal actions. Without approval from the refs, a specific action may not take place, therefore if the referee themselves are corrupt then this is also an issue. Referees get their informal power from the federation and association of the specific sport they are a referee for. They receive a referee license once they complete a specific course. Although they have much authority on the pitch, that is the only area they have it. Outside the stadium they are normal people whereas formal police have authority every where. Referees do not have the authority that police officers have where they may use physical force and things like that, they only have the authority to make definitive decisions throughout a match.

A referee does not hold any statutory authority or power whatsoever, but do have set rules and regulations that sports players must follow. They enforce the sports rules and if any of the rules are breached, then a referee has the 'power' to stop and tell the player what has been done wrong and that it should not be done again. An example would be in the world of boxing. A boxing referee would be the person that enforces the rules and its main role and responsibility are the welfare of both the fighters. Instructions are given to both of the fighters and has the right to stop the fight if the other can no longer continue. To add, a ref are the ones that 'police' the fighters and their authority comes from the designated federation.
http://www.abae.co.uk/aba/index.cfm/news/the-role-of-the-referee/
