By dealing with things that we didn't plan for, we learn something new and find out what we are capable of.

It has happened to me. My neighbor would call me and ask me to come over and babysit or hangout with her and the kids. It became confusing as I did not understand what I was being paid for each week. A challenge that I struggled with was self-advocacy. I wanted to understand what the difference was when I was paid and when I wasn’t. When asked to hangout she expected me to work for free. When I was asked to babysit she would pay me. I realized that she was taking advantage of me. I learned self-advocate and tell her I was available. At first I struggled with fear of losing my job. But when I continued to speak up for myself I had the opportunity to feel more confident in myself

I’ve always have a challenging time with making friends .At ShopRite where I work I thought I had made a genuine friend. Unfortunately, she started asking me for money multiple times without trying to pay me back. Being a kind person I wanted to help her out because I felt bad of her situation and her struggles. I didn’t realize she was taking advantage of me at the time. My mother noticed I was withdrawing money from my account and asked me to explain where it was going. I was afraid to tell her I was helping a friend out. She reached out to my staff to have a talk with me about it . After our talk I learned that people sometimes try and take advantage of people with disabilities. My mother asked to speak with the co-worker/ friend so she would pay all the money back. My coworker eventually paid me back . I realized she wasn’t a true friend and was just using me. In end I decided to not be friends with her because she wasn’t an honest person and used my disability as a weakness.

by Fatima Mirza

Challenges in real life can be turned into opportunities for personal growth in so many ways by being open minded when facing any challenges. My challenge was working at Citi Field during the first season when I needed a lot of help handling a big crowd of Met fans but I was stressed out getting the food out for the fans. I grew from this difficult challenge by not giving up and being patient with the crowd of Met fans.

When I was working at Jojo Apples in Point Lookout, I was very close to my co-worker Cheryl. Cheryl went out of her way to help me learn how to do everything at Jojo Apples. She and I were very close and really cared about each other and she made work fun. I was shocked to come to work one day and found out Cheryl had a heart attack and had passed away the night before. Cheryl’s passing forced me to get to know my other co-workers better and to find new support at work. I was able to be more open to getting to know other staff members and learn from all of them. I will always be grateful for Cheryl’s friendship and the help she gave me in my 1st job. I will never forget her.

Sometimes, challenges can bring along opportunities whether they are big or small. They can change your life path and you can discover that you’re more than capable of taking these risks, sometimes these risks, can bring along rewards. Right now I’m not happy at my job, I’ve been there for over 8 years and has brought along its challenges with some opportunities. I went from being a cashier to becoming a shift manager which was a big opportunity because I learned a lot when I started training. However, with this job I feel like I haven’t had anytime through the years to take more opportunities that would pass by me. I don’t have a lot of free time to learn a new hobby, hang out with friends or family, or have time for myself. When I learned that the Library was part of the internship in MOST 2., I knew that I wanted to take that opportunity to learn a new job skill and intern somewhere that I loved going to every since I was little. Now that I’m starting this internship, I’m ready more than anytime to take hold of this opportunity and have it take me on this new path to a change I have been waiting for the last few years of my life.

Challenges in life can lead to personal growth by learning from experience something that’s not easy, because these are struggles you will still have to face later in life. A challenge I faced was ever passing my high school regents. I finally passed all the exams by studying hard and taking every step necessary in succeeding. You would hate to fail a major exam just to know you’ll have to retake it all over again.

The challenge that I had was losing my mom when I was a teenager. One thing that helped me grow from this challenge was that I have to cherish the things I have on earth and not take them from granted. Taking care of my health should be important. Taking every opportunity to tell people that I love them. Losing my mom helped me realized that she and all the family member’s spirts will always be in my heart. I can always think about them whenever I’m sad.

My challenge is that when I was 18 my dad passed away. I was very sad and upset. I realize that I have many happy memories with my dad. It made me realize that I have lots of people in my life like my family and friends who love me and care for me. I miss my dad, but I’m thankful for all the people I have in my life.
