THESIS: American citizens have different stances on whether we should let immigrants enter the US. According to my research, newly elected President Donald Trump wants to enforce a mass deportation policy that will target undocumented citizens in the United States. The actions he has already taken have affected families and economic progress nationwide. While deporting undocumented citizens will protect the United States integrity. It will also affect the citizens who depend on illegal immigrants who provide for their households. Not only will it make it challenging for those households, but also for the whole United States by removing the undocumented citizens from work Americans don't want to do.

The American Immigration Council shared a report named "Mass Deportation: Devastating Costs to America, Its Budget and Economy". This report states this past year in 2024 policymakers have reinstated policies for mass deportation. The post goes on to mention in the 2016 presidential campaign, Donald Trump promised to start a "deportation force" to gather all undocumented immigrants. Mass deportation is the main focus of the immigration groups. The intro paragraph asks if the former administration of (ICE) should return to power, calling all of them hawkish. They then continue to say some plans have thought to do one massive deportation, while others go on to say it should be a baseline of 1 million deportations per year. The Thesis statement asks, how would the United States carry out this massive deportation, and at what cost. The evidence they provide for their thesis statement is statistics on how many people have been deported these past years and the cost of deporting them. They then add up all the expenses and calculate how much it costs to deport all undocumented immigrants. They say it costs around $315 billion, and that isn't including the long-term costs of guarding the borders from immigrants who have been deported. The author's intended audience is those looking for information on immigration policies but not looking for biased information. The report doesn't provide the author's qualifications, but I will say it is a very good report that hits every point of information on this topic. This source is very helpful to my topic because it provides lots of current information in one place. This source is related to my other sources by not taking a biased take on information. The way they are different is by not providing the names of the authors if there are any.

Meg Anderson wrote an article titled "Police say ICE tactics are eroding public trust in local law enforcement," and goes on to mention how police officers in Santa Fe County announced in an auditorium packed with undocumented citizens about what their uniforms looked like so the undocumented citizens wouldn't mistake cops for ICE. Police Chief Paul Joyce explained to the undocumented citizens that they are not ICE and don't want them to be afraid of calling them when necessary. He went on to say that it is a right for the undocumented citizens to feel safe in their homes, no matter where they are from. She goes on to mention that Chief Joye was dressed in civilian clothes during his speech so he wouldn't frighten the audience he was informing. The author continues to educate the audience that officers all over the United States are holding town hall meetings, making videos, and adding FAQ sections to their websites. This is to inform the public to report crimes; this includes undocumented immigrants. Police leaders discussed that they are anxious because many immigrants have stopped reporting crimes. Lastly, this article is to inform the public, specifically immigrants, that the police officers are trying to regain their trust. This article will help me with my research paper because it shows the divide among citizens and their government.

Robert Lynch and Michael Ettlinger wrote a research article called "The Economic Impact on Citizens and Authorized Immigrants of Mass Deportation". This article targets the impact of large-scale deportation on undocumented immigrants. The reading goes on to talk about how mass deportation is harmful to the American economy, and how it would affect the gross domestic product, reduce employment, and lower wages for American citizens and authorized immigrants. This paper shows the negative labor market and the consequences that are shown across income and pay rates. The authors supply information about rising prices and the US tax revenue decreasing. The evidence they provide to back up their claims is explaining to their audience that undocumented immigrants make up a big part of the US workforce, mainly in agricultural work, construction, and manufacturing work. The author's thesis statement is "Mass deportation would have negative fiscal consequences" The evidence they provide to back up their thesis statement is due to a loss in GDP, the government will lose $860 billion in revenue over 10 years if all undocumented immigrants were deported. The qualifications the authors' have are the following, Michael Ettlinger is a public policy expert administrator, educator, and political advisor in the United States. Robert Lynch has master's and doctoral degrees in Economics from the State University of New York at Stony Brook and a bachelor’s degree in international and development economics from Georgetown University. The authors don't have a biased take on this topic, they are just trying to inform the public. This source is helpful to my topic because they don't have a biased take on the topic, and they provide lots of evidence to prove legitimacy. This source relates to other sources I've used by staying on topic and keeping the tone scholarly. The way this source differs from others I have used it is not biased, and it provides publication and author information.

This article presents research and data on the effects of mass deportation on the US economy. The purpose of this source is to inform American citizens what could happen if the government follows through with mass deportation in the US. The author goes on to mention that US citizens who live in households with undocumented residents who work and support the household could have a drastic dip in finances if the undocumented residents were to be deported. To support his claim the author gives a detailed description clarifying how he got his data for the amount of change in household income due to this event. He states he gathered the average household income amount while including the income of undocumented residents and US citizens. He then recalculated the household income amount but excluded the income of the undocumented residents. The authors who created this article had it published by the Journal of Migration and Human Security, which is a public scholarly publication journal. This tells me this source is credible. This source is useful to my project because it discusses my topic in detail while supporting its claims. This source relates to other sources I have in the sense of staying on topic. The main difference I have seen in most of my sources is whether they are biased or not.

The Joint Economic Committee Democrats released an article titled "Mass Deportations Would Deliver a Catastrophic Blow to the U.S. Economy" that states immigrants in the US have assisted in many economic issues, and why it would not be beneficial to have a mass deportation event. The purpose of this source is to persuade the reader. The Joint Economic Committee Democrats go on to indicate that immigrants have assisted in opening more job positions, pay lots of taxes, and have a high spending rate. They also include that Democrats have attempted to reform the immigration system, but Republicans try to use this issue to block their attempts. From the reading, I have concluded the audience they are targeting are those with Democratic beliefs. The Joint Economic Committee Democrats try to persuade their audience with partisan persuasion, a political tactic to highlight efforts from one group while being hindered by the opposing group. The thesis of the Joint Economic Committee Democrats is that the effects of mass deportation could be better if documented immigrants or U.S. citizens also left the country. The thesis is more opinion-based versus factual. The qualifications and expertise of the author aren't available, but in my opinion, I would say that I would not use this article in a research paper. This source relates to other sources I have since they have the same idea the difference this source has from other sources, I've used is that it is biased.
