Culture shock between Asia (China) and European countries (America) which discusses lifestyle and work. Culture Shock that occurred between Asia (China) and Europe (America)

1. Chinese people are often seen squatting and can do it easily compared to Europeans.

The reason for completing the culture shock differences above is that there are differences in toilets, Chinese people prefer squatting toilets because the cost is cheap, and people are more interested in using squat toilets than sitting toilets, therefore Chinese people are easier to do squats than with Americans. For Americans themselves, they are rarely seen squatting because they are not used to it, because they don't care about their image in public and only for comfort, and also they find it very tiring to touch the ground with their fingers.

2. The habit of Chinese people drinking hot water, compared to European countries that live only drinking cold water from the tap. The Chinese people have been drinking hot water since the second world war, they really believe that drinking hot water has an important role for health, while in European countries like America, they often drink water from the tap that has been provided.

3. Chinese people can't stand work compared to other European countries. Basically China implements a hard work system for a successful economy, like the Ali-baba company that implements a hard work system, therefore, people in China must be mentally prepared to work.

One of the culture shocks that make me shocked the most was that China implemented a system of long working hours, therefore i really admire Chinese people who can work almost a dozen hours a week for the sake of success and the realization of an advanced economy, but it would be better if the company could slightly reduce the system of working hours, because it might have an impact on the health and mental health of future generation.

But the pronunciation is a bit fast, so I had to pause a few times to understand more what was being said. And also stop for writing and translate from pronunciations of vocabs have never heard before.

Culture Shock according to the speaker's experience moving to Australia from Brazil:

1. Used cars in Australia are much cheaper

This first culture shock made the speakers a little shocked about the many luxury cars he often found in Australia, apparently the reason is because used cars in Australia are very cheap compared to other European countries. Meanwhile, in Brazil it is relatively cheap for used cars too, but in Australia it is much cheaper.

2. Cuts of meat

In Australia, barbecue cuts are very different from the original, they are rarely found and it is very difficult to find suitable cuts of meat for barbecue, for example Korean style barbecue cuts. So to get the right cut of meat, you have to have a butcher cut it for you. While in Brazil it is very easy to find the size of the cut of meat that is suitable for barbecue needs.

3. Toilet Paper

In Australia we use toilet paper, and the most surprising thing is that you can flush toilet paper, down the toilet. It’s really amazing. While in Brazil use Toilet paper too, but the sewer system isn’t set up to be able to handle flushing of toilet paper, so instead of flushing it you have to put it in a bin next to the toilet and empty that every day. So there you go, toilet paper was the one of those strange things in Australia that you can flush down the toilet.

4. Coffee Culture

In Australia, especially in big cities like Sydney and Melbourne, there is a very high interest in coffee, for that there are so many different kinds of coffee beans that can be found, and they have their own way of serving it. Therefore, it is not surprising that Australia has a variety of delicious coffee.

5. Barbecue at camping grounds and at the beach

In Australia, the average camping place provides gas holder and barbecue equipment without having to bring your own fuel for cooking, so it's not surprising that many people barbecue everywhere with the tools provided. Whereas in Brazil the culture is very strange and unusual.

6.Put unused things in front of the house, and it's free, and people know that what is placed in front of the house is trash that can be reused, and they can pick it up anytime.

7.drinking water from the tap, the water from tap in Australia is safe to drink, and can drink it from anywhere, such as can drink water out of the shower when take bath, and can drink water comes out of the pipes in your house. And this is in really different in Southeast Asia and in Brazil who cannot drink water from the tap.

8.Cities in Australia are quite safe, so some people don't lock their homes or vehicles when they are traveling, if in Brazil it is possible for crime to occur.

9.Walking in Australia is very safe especially at night like in the city of Melbourne or Sydney, in contrast to Brazil which is less safe when walking at night.

10.Australia is pretty clean with trash, it's just that there are some people who throw their cigarette butts on the ground, usually there is a trash can in close proximity when walked.

One of the culture shocks that made me surprised and amazed is that in Australia it is very simple and easy to dispose of toilet paper, just flush it and put it in the toilet again without having to throw it in the trash. And it can be a new innovation for other countries. But of course must have to be able to manage the water regulation so that it stays smooth and pay attention to the disposal of waste that should not harm and endanger the ecosystem and environment.

Culture shock in the UK is very surprising for speakers and very different from in their country, Culture shock here depict a necessity to learn to know more about a new culture in any country, whether just visiting or staying.

So there are three important points about the culture shock that occurred in the UK:

1. The UK is incredibly Multicultural and Ethnically diverse

The first culture shock is amazing, which is about being multicultural and ethnically diverse. Examples can be taken from several speakers' experiences, namely about the existence of Mexican restaurants and there are also places to eat served by Bengalis, who are predominantly Muslim, and they provide halal beef and drinks. Two very different human sides and live side by side.

2. The UK is highly institutionalized

Speakers said that the UK is really a very institutionalized country. An example from the speaker's experience is that there are many signs, and they are often encountered, such as "no parking", "keep going", "turn right". Next is public toilet facilities which also give signs that require them to be used as needed and not for too long.

3. British drunk people can be really loud and kind of scary

So in the UK a lot of drunk people are loud and a little scary, but that only happens to some people.

The culture shock of this podcast about the UK gave me new knowledge, which I had never heard of before. The thing that surprised me from this culture shock in the UK was that it turns out that UK people when they are drunk they will make a loud and very scary sound even if only partially, and I think that is a lesson that I can take.

This culture shock is about speakers who grew up in Serbia, lived in Hungary and Italy and last moved to America. So speakers spend a lot of time with European countries and then move to America.

1. Everything is so big and there are so many option to choose from

First about “everything is so big” “a place where everything looks big, like grocery stores and food, even though the streets, the highway, the cars, everything are so large. And other place like a small apartment but feels very big, example the sink in the kitchen and the fridge.

Second about “so many to choose from”, so in America there are lots of choices on the food menu, and the children's menu has lots of choices too. Very visible difference with European culture because in Europe the whole family eats the same food.

2. Everything is based on convenience and saving time, and everything is really fast paced

First about “saves time” in America most of things are disposable can find, like plates, and most people use disposable plates, so they don’t have to do the dishes. It’s easier and saves time. Second about “convenience” like lot of things are packaged. Little bags in big bags, which also goes for convenience and practically, so people won’t throw food away so often. Third about “Fast passed” like can find drive thru almost everywhere, not just at fast food restaurants but for ice cream, coffee shops, bank, pharmacy, also have the option to get things done from your car.

3. People are extremely friendly and polite

Example like people passing by on the street would smile and you, wave, and strangers would chit-chat with you at the elevator, restaurant or the cashier store.

4. Gathering and parties means playing games

First about “Gathering” and most of the gatherings are about doing some type activity together. Watching game, playing a game, and Americans have a lots of game to play. Second “Parities” like every party, wedding, birthday is organized structured and scheduled. For example like every birthday would have the same timeline, same activity.

5. There are so many rules, laws and expectations and everything works and function perfectly

For example, there are also lots of rules and signs everywhere.

6. There is no such a thing as saying “I love you” too much

American couples would tell each other “I love you” like you are saying hi or goodbye to somebody. And its really different from Hungary

The culture shock that made me shocked about America and never heard before that is about most Americans using disposable plate because simple, and practical and they don't require to wash the dishes, but what needs to be considered is about the waste from the plate, of course it must be able to manage the waste properly so as not to harm the surrounding environment.
