The Right to Vote

Michele Norris's father was one of the many black veterans that wished to vote, and when they were waiting in line for hours, they were tasked with answering an almost impossible question. Michele Norris states that ""What is meant by veto power in the U.N?' to 'How many suds are in a bar of soap?'" ( 121). These questions were made to be hard enough were the people answering questions would not be able to vote, and those people were most of the black veterans.

Many black veterans were hoping to vote, especially Michele Norris's father who was discharged from the US Navy at the time. Her father was only shot, but many other black veterans were not so lucky. "...as many as half a dozen black veterans were reportedly killed by police officers from Birmingham.." (125). It may not have been around the same time, but most of these black veterans were hoping to get the chance to vote. Only to have it taken away by people fearful of change.

Thesis: Michele Norris dives deeper into her father's shooting by figuring out what else happened that night, and also discovering that many other black veterans were killed trying to get the right to vote.
