My students come into 5th grade art having very little experience with art. In fact, we do not have any certified art teachers at the elementary level, and they have very little exposure to the arts from pre-k through 4th grade. When they enter my doors I am their first experience in an actual art class. In 5th grade students only get one hour a week for one semester, making their time with me only 15-18 class periods that first year. I see all of the 5th grade students during that time. At a stage in life where students start doubting themselves and their artistic abilities, I want to empower them to try! I want them to realize that they do have potential to be creative if only they use their imagination, try their personal best and don't give up! My classroom rules reflect these ideas as two of them are to "use your imagination" and "try your personal best." We also talk about how students are not allowed to say "I can't do it!" My hope is that with this text set, I can share some of these books, videos, articles, and quotes each class to instill those ideals into my students and that when they come to me as 6th graders and see me everyday, we explore and create freely, knowing that we can do it, if only we try!

A Splash of Red: The Life and Art of Horace Pippin

The story is about Horace Pippin's love for making art. Throughout the book people are constantly saying "Make a picture for us Horace." That is what he did until life obstacles got in the way, but he still continued to follow his passion. During WWI he was shot in his arm and lost his ability to draw. He taught himself how to create again, using his other hand for support. This story is great for students to hear about how even though things may seem to be getting in the way of following your dreams, your dreams are still possible to achieve. There is plenty of backmater in the book that supports the history of the story and discusses how the author and illustrator researched the information. This is a great message to KEEP TRYING!
