Subliminal messages in the advertising industry

Will you believe it if I say that most of our decisions regarding buying the things we want, from a fast food sandwich or a movie ticket, to a pack of cigarettes, are being carefully controlled by companies and major corporations? Advertising companies have been using a technique that is called “Subliminal advertising”. This technique uses subliminal messages hidden in visuals (logos, phrases, pictures, etc.) that are then placed on an ad or a poster, or flashed in front us while watching TV, in order to train our subconscious to associate certain brands with certain objects that we use in our daily life. In this case, these objects act as stimuli that trigger our brain into thinking about these brands that have been linked with specific objects in our subconscious, without even noticing it.

According to the website http://blog.visme.co one example that illustrates how subliminal stimuli impacts our choices through conscious perception is an experiment called the “German wine and French wine experiment” that was directed by a British supermarket, where they displayed two brands of wine (German and French) that are similar, price wise and sweetness wise. The store then presented the stimuli that would affect they buyer’s subconscious in the form of French and German music, played on alternate days. When the results were then analyzed, it showed that sales of German wine increased on days when German music was played, and the same increase happened with French wine when French music was played.

The reason why huge companies use subliminal messages while communicating with us through ads, is to get more money off of the viewer buying their products. For instance, some advertising companies replicate old posters of well-known and well-liked movies, while advertising their new movie, to get the viewers’ brains to relate the new movie with the good old movie that everyone loves, so they go and watch in in cinemas. In addition, a famous YouTube star called “Shane Dawson” shared his experience with subliminal messages. He said that while working in a famous “Weight Loss Programs & Diet plan” company, he noticed plenty of advertisements promoting a famous chocolate brand, so that one’s brain relates weight loss products with unhealthy products. Consequently, resulting in a never ending cycle of you losing weight and gaining it back, a cycle that not only works for the sake of these companies, by increasing their sales and making them wealthier, but also benefits manufacturers of obesity related drugs, that I strongly believe that their aim is to get people more obese and unhealthy, in order for them to sell their drugs more.

So before you take the decision to purchase something, THINK! Are you being brainwashed into wanting or craving this specific product? It is certainly clear that some companies have gone so far into manipulating us through advertisement, because ultimately, according to https://www.ukessays.com, it is a form of communication intended to persuade an audience, but even though we can’t control our subconscious or everything we see/hear, it is good to be aware of the strong yet subtle messages hidden in one of the most famous forms of communication.

Friends is such an influential and innovative show. For the past 10 years, people have been incorporating this show is their everyday lives by associating specific quotes said by the characters with specific situations; for instance, my friends and I always yell “Joey doesn’t share food” whenever someone tries to take a bite of our food. Hence, I decided to create a poster that included all the memorable moments and quotes from the series, and I put it up in my room in order to remind me of how a simple quote from your favorite TV show can lighten the mood.
http://putlockers.tv/tv/friends/
I recommend you watch these episodes: https://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/12/31/best-friends-episodes_n_6397222.html

My classmates an I created a comic book for module 2 "Design Thinking".
Our comic book “Charlie” was inspired by some of the problems that we teens/young adults face and feel in our everyday lives. For example, trying to change who we are to fit in, trying to live up to peoples’ expectations, always seeking validation from the society, feeling left out sometimes, considering other peoples’ opinions and having low self-esteem. We tried to present these problems in a funny, silly way, so we related these problems to a mouse named Charlie. Enjoy

Yoko Ono’s Cut Piece, first performed in 1964, was a direct invitation to an audience to participate in an unveiling of the female body much as artists had been doing throughout history. By creating this piece as a live experience, Ono hoped to erase the neutrality and anonymity typically associated with society’s objectification of women in art. For the work, Ono sat silent upon a stage as viewers walked up to her and cut away her clothing with a pair of scissors. This forced people to take responsibility for their voyeurism and to reflect upon how even passive witnessing could potentially harm the subject of perception. It was not only a strong feminist statement about the dangers of objectification, but became an opportunity for both artist and audience members to fill roles as both creator and artwork.

The action of the poetically and ironically titled Through the Night Softly consisted of Burden slithering across broken glass in his underwear with his hands bound behind his back. This raw performance put the audience in discomfort by having to view the pain felt by Burden as shards of glass shredded the bloodied front of his body. In contrast to the use of commercials to advertise for upcoming events, Burden purchased late night commercial spots on a local television station, running a ten-second clip of this piece so viewers would get to see it in the detached setting of their homes, thus placing the artwork on the level of our increasingly detached reception of horrific events. That is why I think Chris Burden is such brilliant artist.
