When Matt had been alone in the woods, he learned that he needed to act fast and do things quickly. One of his actions shown is independence. He knew that being alone, he had no choice but to be independent and fight alone.

Later on, he meets Attean, and he then gains a lot more respect toward the Native nation and community. Matt is very resilient and brave. Although he was inexperienced, he was willing to learn new things with survival on the line.

When Matt first meets Attean, he believes that Native people are unintelligent. Throughout the book, Attean shows Matt his way through the woods and new survival methods. When Matt realizes how smart Attean is, he then rethinks the original thoughts he had and starts to give Attean credit for what he is doing and learning.
