Seven Laws of Teaching by Buhr, Scott

For this exercise, we’ll just read the first chapter (12 pages) of The Seven Laws of Teaching (see the link in Canvas). Since this book was first published in 1886, you may find the language to be a bit awkward. On this Padlet, you will make one post about what breaking one of the “laws” of teaching might look like. Do this by describing a situation in which the teacher or the learner has “broken” that particular law.

A way a teacher could break one of the laws is by not understanding your students well enough to know how they learn (because not every student learns the same way.). If you don't know their experiences, the way the apply things, and their senses, you will not be able to teach them in a way that they will thrive in their future classes.

A teacher is supposed to use the student's mind to think in the way desired, and this should be achieved by asking questions or by giving examples rather than by only stating a fact to be memorized.

One example of a teacher breaking the third law is when they do not study their lesson before hand and when it comes time for class they are frantically reading the book and trying to understand it. The students can notice that the teachers do not fully understand the content and it can make it more confusing for the students. John Milton Gregory says in his book, "Teaching, in its simplest sense, is the communication of knowledge." (Gregory 20) When a teacher does not understand the content of the lesson the knowledge cannot be transferred to the students.

When the students ask questions, the teacher does not know the answer, contradicts himself, and confuses each student. The students then leave the class even more confused than before, which does not allow for proper learning. Students are not allowed to grasp the concept when this law is ignored.

One way to break the Law of the Teaching process would be unnecessary memorization. This is when instead of teaching by helping your students draw connections between truths, you simply tell them something and expect them to remember. Anyone can tell students something, not everyone can teach. For example, in any kind of history class the teacher can take two very different approaches. The first approach is when the teacher just lists dates, events, and documents in a one sided way. In a way that does not cause the student to draw any conclusions about the significance of these facts about history. The second approach is when the teacher shares the dates, events, and documents. However in this approach the teacher asks questions that force a student to come to conclusions about the significance of the events. Overall, it is important to note the distinct difference recalling something and truly thinking about its applications.

Breaking the law of the teacher would look something like this. You wake up and, that day you need to teach a lesson on World War 1, which you are not familiar with. So instead of preparing and studying to teach the lesson, you just go for it and you fill your student's brains with false ideas. Your students now think they know what it is but it is all incorrect information. Instead, the teacher must study their lessons thoroughly so they teach their students the correct things.

For breaking the law of the learning process, I think that it could be an example of the teacher teaching material that they themselves don’t understand and they end up greatly relying on the textbook. Then testing the students on topics and questions from that material they don’t even fully understand themselves. This results in the teachers not being able to answer students questions accurately or with confidence. Some could also be upset and question why the student doesn’t know the answers when the teacher doesn’t know it themselves.

As a result I have questions because I don't understand what she is teaching, and she is unable to answer my questions. So, then she attempts to explain it and does so incorrectly leaving me with false knowledge. Ultimately, my teacher was confused about the material herself and was therefore unable to give understanding to me.

According to The Law of the Teacher, teachers should be a good example to their students. Their actions in the classroom should always reflect a Biblical worldview. Besides parents, the teacher is the main role model for the children they are teaching. If an educator is upset or frustrated with a student, and puts them down with their words, they are breaking The Law of the Teacher. Teachers should be encouraging and patient with their students.

One way a teacher could break one of the laws of teaching is by using complex language in the classroom. In order to be successful, a teacher needs to get down on the student's level. If that does not happen, the student will not be able to comprehend what is being taught and will therefore fail in his/her education. A teacher should be able to explain the concepts in clear, concise language so his/her pupils can excel in their studies.

A few examples are when the teacher jumps into a lesson and has no idea what they are teaching without preparation, but expects the students to understand it. Without understanding it themselves. Another example could be when the teacher gets annoyed with the students so they just give up, and stop teaching the class because of that one student. The teacher should have patients with the student and students like how God is patient with us.

Without stopping to ensure that everyone is caught up and understands it can lead to students who are stressed about not knowing exactly what to do, bad grades, confusion, and maybe even comparison on how thinking they aren't as smart when really some people just need more time and explaining than others.

To break the law of the learning process is where the teacher could be teaching their students to believe everything they are learning. But the student is taking all this information that they are taught without critically thinking about it. The principle of learning is understanding, and how is a student going to learn without doing their part which is to ask reasonable questions and critically think about what is taught? This is also wrong because clearly in the law it states that "the learner must reproduce in his own mind the truth to be acquired". Meaning what the student is learning, they should be able to ask reasonable questions and critically think about the material and be able to understand it. Breaking this law creates an atmosphere in schools for students to have a habit of just doing everything and not learning anything. Which ultimately creates a society of people who do everything they are told rather than critically think about the decision.

For instance, I have a core subject teacher who will read information directly from the book and never re-visit it. She assumes we will remember what she has told (but not taught) us or that we will re-visit the information on our own. This causes confusion later on the test or when we learn a new topic built off of this, all because she had not taken the time to follow this rule and deepen it's impression on us.

Instead of reviewing the material ahead of time, the teacher relies solely on the textbook during class and often mispronounces terms or gives vague, inaccurate explanations when students ask questions. As a result, students become confused and frustrated, and their understanding of the subject remains shallow. In this situation, the teacher has broken the Law of the Teacher by not mastering the content before attempting to teach it.

One way a teacher might break one of the “laws” of teaching is by not using language their students actually understand. For example, imagine a science teacher trying to explain photosynthesis but only using really complicated words like “photophosphorylation” and “chemosynthetic pathways.” The teacher keeps going on, thinking everyone is following along, but most of the class is totally lost. Some students might nod or pretend to get it because they don’t want to seem confused, but deep down they have no idea what’s going on. Since the teacher never stops to explain the terms in simpler words or check for understanding, the lesson becomes frustrating instead of helpful. This breaks the Law of the Language because the teacher and students aren’t really communicating. When that happens, the whole point of the lesson is lost — the students don’t learn, and the teacher doesn’t realize why.

If a teacher is trying to explain something to his elementary students, and he uses a confusing analogy or a five syllable word, then the students are going to be completely lost. They might miss the point of the lesson, or be unable to grasp the concept. A teacher should take into account the vocabulary and comprehension levels of the students and try his best to explain the lesson accordingly. For example, if a teacher is trying to explain that his sister always seems to be tired, but instead of using the word tired he calls her "lethargic", the students might have no idea what he means. They could think he is saying something rude, and go home and tell their parents that he said something horrible, when in reality he was explaining that she has an actual medical condition. He has broken the third law, which says that a teacher should use language that is understood by both parties: teacher and student. (Disclaimer: I have no idea how this condition works, and this is not meant to be offensive, I only chose it as an example.)

Instead of doing their own studying, the teacher arrives to the lesson unprepared. On the fly, the teacher stumbles their way through the lesson, making contradictory statements and being unable to answer the student's questions. Not only will the student be confused because of the lack of confidence the teacher holds, but what the teacher did relay will more than likely be wrong. The student is now unprepared for other lessons in the future and any assessments that may be given. On the other hand, the teacher also will have not thoroughly done their job and made a fool of themself.

Let's say that you are in a class with a teacher who is teaching math, and they just gave this long, confusing lecture about parabolas. Then he or she looks at you and goes ok, do your homework, or don't, this math doesn't really matter. Or say a student asks a question and the teacher gives the most basic answer and doesn't really explain. What are you going to think? I would think that if my teacher, who does this math, thinks it doesn't really matter why should I, I mean, it's confusing and I don't want to spend time trying to figure it out, so I might as well not do it.

this kind of teacher can lead students to fail in life. while this specific topic might not be the most relatable in real life it's still important to because it teaches a kid how to deal with difficult things. but if a teacher is disinterested in what they're doing, kids will be as well. Students are influenced by their teachers.

A student breaking the law where a student must be interested could look like when a student is not giving a single care about what is being taught. The student is talking with his friends, being disruptive during class, and is giving the teacher attitude when the teacher tries to correct him. Some of the other students around him think he is being a nuisance, while others don't really care. The teacher after class gives him demerits. But this student has received too many to count, and doesn't really care. He doesn't care about school because he doesn't see school as important and believes it to be a waste of time. To fix this, the student needs to be disciplined in a way that will get him to think about his actions. Or he needs to realize the value of school and what it can truly offer him

Even if some of the students are paying attention, if the teacher does not at least give the rest of the class a chance to refocus, they will have broken this law of teaching.

Breaking the law of the language could look something like teaching a chemistry lesson to an Algebra 2 class. The words and definitions will probably go right over their heads, and they probably won't understand anything you are saying, therefore making your teaching pointless.

One morning as they review, he shows a different way to solve the problem then the other morning. The teacher is struggling to be consistent and the students soon become confused because many different problem-solving ways have been used.

It is crucial for teachers to consistently do their part to help students while teaching, reviewing work, and answering questions.

A situation that happened to me in a class is not building rapport with students. The only thing that the teacher did was read off the board so we can take notes. The teacher knew what he was teaching, but didn’t truly understand what we needed to fully succeed.

breaking the law of the learning process would be when a lesson is taught, and not reviewed. Our brains create pathways by repeatedly doing something, and the same is true about learning. If the material is not reviewed properly, the students will most likely forget it. It is the teachers responcibility to make sure the material is being reviewed so it is not forgotten.

Breaking the law of review and application would defeat the entire purpose of learning things in the first place. Though I do feel that students shouldn't believe that grades are life or death, if nothing gets tested, the teacher cannot fully know that the students retained what they were taught. With the knowledge of an upcoming test, they would be more inclined to pay attention and earn the material. This also helps prepare them for real life application.
