Taking learning outside means that pupils can experience working with the natural world/museums etc whilst applying and gaining new knowledge and skills. It makes the learning engaging and relevant to pupils everyday lives and allows them to engage in different ways. I haven't had the opportunity to take science lessons outside during placement but it is something I would like to do if I get the chance. Taking children outside of the classroom allows children to understand and experience science in the real world and see that science is all around them. I think it would also help children to grasp the idea that science is unpredictable and help to engage children as they experience new and exciting environments. Furthermore, outdoor learning during science lessons provides children with experiences of science in the real-world and helps them identify the science that is happening all around them. I have had the opportunity to teach a science lesson outdoors which focused on investigating the animals/insects which live in a woodland habitat. This personal experience can make the learning more memorable, thus will benefit the children’s overall understanding.  Teaching a topic on nature or trees, for example, will allow children see the learning in front of them.

It creates a more stimulating and interactive environment and helps to create interest and gauge attention. However, there are more opportunities for things to go wrong. For example, children can become distracted and play when they are meant to be doing something else. It helps the children to be engaged whilst also seeing and learning science in different environments. In my first placement, I was able to teach science outside of the classroom in year 2. The children were investigating different types of plants and comparing them with others in a table. For example, describing the size, colour, features whilst drawing a picture of each one. They enjoyed this activity as they were able to use scientific equipment (magnifying glasses) to look closely at different types of plants. I think outdoor learning is an effective practice in primary teaching. I have experienced this when being in forest school as well on my second placement. In my placement school each class got to go out every couple of months and they loved it. The school also had 2 nurture groups which included children who had special educational needs or were shy and needed to come out of their shell.
