Coming Soon to a GO account near you...RAZ (ESOL)! I can share the details if you like, but long story short, a Raz icon with "(ESOL)" next to it will soon be appearing in your GO accounts. For ESOL teachers, this will be the only RAZ account you see. However, for K-2 ELL students, they will see TWO RAZ accounts. I hope to have more information regarding a timeline soon.

General Education: RAZ + Raz logo

ESOL Account: RAZ (ESOL) + Raz logo

Also, don't forget!....Complete this Google Form on RAZ ELL Use at your earliest convenience.

After more feedback last week, I wanted to make sure to clarify a few things:

Students on ESOL Monitor only need one goal for the year (a maintenance goal).

Students on ESOL Transition should have more than one goal as they can/should be receiving ESOL services of some kind. One of the goals can be a maintenance goal.

Active ESOL Status should have 3 goals by the end of the year.

Students that have declined ESOL services do not need ILP goals.

I realize that some goals may not be "complete" at the end of the year or a given timeframe due to the nature of how skills are progressively taught with increasing difficulty over the course of a school year or even educational career. That said, please know that this wording will be taken into consideration moving forward.

Updated rosters should be in your email inboxes. Please let me know if you notice any discrepancies. Thanks for your patience.

Last but not least, I will not be checking or asking for an update on these until at least December 1st. Several of you have requested additional time to do them...not a problem.

As always, please let me know if you have questions or wish to discuss things further.

There are two ways to do this:

First Type: The question consists of two possible answers joined by 'or.' Some examples are below:

Are the scissors on the table or floor?

Did Westward Expansion happen in the middle of the U.S. in 1803 or 1853?

Which could carry more pioneers: a stagecoach or a steamboat?

Think about what you know about pioneers. Would a covered wagon have a more difficult trip traveling through a pass or on a trail?

Second Type: The question provides the stem for the answer by including one of the 5-W question words or how. Some examples are below:

Tell me how many legs a ladybug has.

Please explain why a caterpillar eats a lot.

Can you tell me where ants live?

How do you know the difference between an insect and an arachnid?

You may or may not have been aware, but over the past year or so there has been a district committee discussing the use of Huck Finn in our classrooms. This was sent out a few weeks ago, but I wanted to share it with you in case you hadn't been made aware. The following is what has been decided and will be implemented starting in the 2019-2020 school year as this year is being used to develop support documents for teacher use.

Huckleberry Finn will no longer be taught with direct instruction. It may be a literature circle choice.

No student will be sent out of the room for alternative instruction or smaller lit circle participation, even if HF is a primary novel selected by the class

ESDC Curriculum Leaders will ensure teachers and students have adequate novel/resource selections and will not have to read HF if other novels are “spoken for”

HF will not be a district required novel at any grade level. No teacher is required to teach the work.

If taught, HF will be an option in Literature Circles as 1 of 3 or 4 novels to be adopted/selected by the curriculum committee (ELA curr work happening this year)

Any teacher choosing to use HF will have a set of front loading and support documents we'll ask that they utilize-created by the curriculum committee. This will be posted on the PowerSchool Curriculum page for HS ELA as an easy to find resource

Our affiliates who support secondary schools will be part of the curriculum design/committee of these units as we design scope and sequence in curriculum teams as next steps

We will provide training on Literature Circles for secondary ELA staff
