Why was transportation—particularly the canals and railroads—so important in the early stages of industrialization?

Transportation was crucial to the early stages of industrialization. The development of canals allowed goods to travel at a faster rate, which allowed for more inventions. The Erie Canal was the first canal to connect the West with the Atlantic. Overall, this increased trade, products, and inventions. The railroad was a very fast form of transportation. They were cheaper and could get people and goods to their destination very fast.

Which technological innovation was most important for early-nineteenth-century economic development?

The most important technological innovation for early-nineteenth-century economic development was the creation of the steamboat. Robert Fulton helped develop the steamboat, which proved to be a crucial innovation for expansion Westward. Farmers were buying land and gave settlers the opportunity to settle West. Goods and services were being transported in a faster and more efficient manner.

What effects did the movement from a subsistence to a market economy have on American society, including farmers, laborers, and women? What were the advantages and disadvantages of the change?

The movement from a subsistence to a market economy had a big impact on American society. Instead of families growing food for themselves, they sold their crops and used the money to buy other goods from strangers. This transition to a new economy made farmers have to provide for more people, and having to plant more crops. More factories were created which meant more jobs for laborers opened up. Less homemade goods were used because of this change therefore women became closer to their family. The advantages of this new economy created for more overall competition which led to more goods and more inventions. The disadvantages were the jobs that people had to work did not pay a lot and consisted of harsh conditions.

What caused the market and transportation revolutions of the nineteenth century? As you read this chapter, how many different reasons for the development of these changes can you identify?

The desire for the East to be connected and involved with the West caused the market and transportation revolutions of the nineteenth century. Transportation allowed for goods to flow from both ways, and the market revolution created a new economy that was a flow of goods and services. The reason for these developments is that we needed a proper and reliable source of transportation in order to be a unified country. Our economy needed this shift because of our growing population and high demand for goods and services.

In this chapter, the authors maintain that “clearly the early factory system did not shower its benefits evenly on all.” What relevant historical evidence can you find in this chapter or the previous ones that supports, modifies, or refutes this assertion?

I support the assertion "clearly the early factory system did not shower its benefits evenly on all." The conditions seen in factories were very harsh and cruel. Workers worked long hours for little pay and their meals that were provided were not good. Women also worked more hours and got paid less. Children under the age of 10 were also seen working in these harsh conditions in factories.

As you read this chapter, can you combine the information from the primary source excerpts, tables, figures, maps, and text to create a persuasive understanding of westward migration and demographic changes in the United States from 1790 to 1860?

Westward migration was a new idea introduced to Americans when Andrew Jackson became president. The early life of the West proved to be not fun and miserable, however the introduction of new inventions, like the steamboat, canals, and railroads helped lead to demographic changes. More settlers migrated West and a difference in rich and poor occurred when we transitioned to a market economy. People of this time were intrigued with the West because of the new opportunities.
