Being trauma informed means that we look at ourselves, look at our biases, our experiences, our responses, and then recognize that others are different and do not have to respond the same way. We can recognize our common humanity. We can approach situations with calmness, compassion, understanding, and be mindful so that we mitigate rather than cause more harm.

Experience is ignored where I work.

This training is very productive for me as it has help me understand the person that I am. Coming from a culturally diverse background and historically marginalized people, we find it difficult to talk about these kinds of topic while carrying about a lot of burden with us whenever we finds ourselves in the "said advanced countries". Burden such as imposter syndrome, not belonging, not understood... I have come to understand that I come with a different tool kits, different perspective/worldview and I can learn the world of others by choosing "a different way to be" I have now learned that I can heal and regulate as need be. The fact that I come with a different "tool kits doesn't make me better or worse, it just means I am different". I have learnt to approach every conversations with kindness of heart and compassion. Thank you.

Despite this, we must take ownership and accountability at an individual level. It takes many voices to create change, and awareness is the first step. I hope to create a safer place within my work environment.

My main takeaways from being trauma informed isn't just about being compassionate on an individual level, but also acknowledging systemic oppression that occurs in institutions. I think that a lot of work needs to go into intentionally being trauma-informed and interacting with others that are trauma-informed, but that institutions need to be reformed to reflect this as well.

Being trauma-informed goes beyond simply being aware; it requires intentional action to foster environments where people feel seen, heard, respected and supported. Something that stood out most was the power of small shifts/actions. For example, communicating in a trauma-informed manner can make a meaningful difference in others experiences, as well promote safety and connection. Moving forward, I will carry what I have learned into my clinical work and research, specifically the importance of approaching others with empathy and flexibility. I plan to integrate the principles from this workshop into my daily interactions and professional endeavours to promote well-being, safety and inclusivity.

Being trauma-informed means connecting with intuition rather than fitting within systems. Our systems are not built to be trauma-informed - there is fear around trust through transparency, mutuality through collaboration, and voice through choice. But really, these are intuitive ways to live and be - especially in community. Being trauma-informed means to connect with this intuition over the loud voice of the system so that we can, collectively, create a new system that accommodates all.
