How did the colonial experience of your country affect your identity, economic behavior, social behavior, and experiences in life?

Seemingly, the colonial mindset is taught and essentially built into our lives. This can always be something to learn, however seeing as it is actually part of our culture, we can’t help but adapt.

As I have seen from Filipino media concerning historical figures pre-colonially, we evidently have our differences. The way we dress, move, act, speak, and many more. Kids I have seen presently in my experience, are spoken to in English who later in life find it difficult to incorporate the Filipino language into their daily lives. I also see this in myself, family, and friends who are living eptiomes of the colonial mindset.

When it comes to the economy, the changes we have been seeing economically are mostly loosely based on the way other countries economies move–giving a sense of idolatry in our economic performance.

Hypothetical: Reflecting with the ideas of Enlightenment and the events of the American and French Revolutions, with the current state of Philippine politics, economics, and society, what do you think would be the trigger for the people to start a nationwide revolution and what do you think will change after it?

I believe there has always been a revolution–seen in the writings of the Filipino people, rallies being held when something in our lives have gone wrong, rebellious actions done by the Filipino people against our government, but this questions asks this in the event of a major revolution. I think the people would have a start with the fluctuation of inflation especially if this flares up and completely takes a toll on our economic performance. After the rebellion, I believe economy would downgrade.

Hypothetical: You are a child in a country that is involved in a war.Fact 1: The adult men in your family (e,g., father, uncles, brothers, cousins, etc.) were drafted in the military to help fight the enemies. It has been a year since they left home and you haven’t heard any from them, not even letters. What would you feel? Why?

I would be worried. The people whom I love could potentially be killed. Their lives are at risk and the fact that I cannot communicate with them will cause me to believe other plausible scenarios. As a girl, I am aware that there is nothing that I could do to help them. I would feel helpless. Forced to live every day with an incomplete family, and forced to deal with it.

Fact 2: You, your mother or guardian, and your siblings (if you have any) are left at your home. Your mother or guardian lost her high-paying job as the economy focused its resources on the war effort. Your family now depends on rations distributed in an irregular schedule. You have to save food as it is unsure when the next ration is coming. Reminiscing on your lifestyle before the war, what would you feel? Why?

If I were in this scenario I would feel pity for myself and my family. This is still common to this day. Yet all we can do is feel pitiful. You may think only the army struggles during a war, but even normal citizens get affected. The life of these civilians dramatically changed in one night. Naturally, I would feel overwhelmed and angry with this huge adjustment.

Fact 3: On a random day, you heard sirens blaring. Your mother or guardian told you and your siblings (if you have any) that you must evacuate to a sturdier shelter. Your city is being air-raided. Later, while at the shelter, you heard gunshot noises. The war has come to your place. What would you feel? Why?

Honestly, I would freeze. Clueless about what is happening and terrified of what to do. I'd feel hopeless. Believing that this is the end. It is very scary to imagine yourself in this situation so I don't know what I would do. I can see myself in panic and shock. I would feel completely powerless and the inability to do anything.
