This religion believed that everyone is damned unless they find signs that they will be sent to Heaven after death. These people were seen as "God's chosen ones". Back in the 1690s, many of these people believed in witches and witchcraft and whoever was tried as a witch and refused to admit the truth, no matter how innocent they were, were punished with some form of death.
