Each main character in the novel suffered some type of rejection, there have even been minor characters who have experienced it as well. Mr. Washington is the main protagonist when rejection is mentioned because throughout the novel it seems as though he rejects himself and his own culture. We then have his brother, Isaiah, who was rejected help from his mother. At last we have Rashid, who was continuously rejected by Mr. Washington for being another brother. I focused more on what happens when Rashid and Mr. Washington faces isolation and how they cope with it. The novel at its core is about development. I say development because throughout the novel we see a lot of character development. However, they all come in contact and create this storyline of a boy, Rashid, who goes to an all-boys school and has to deal with losing his brother and not having his parents truly present on top of having a teacher, Mr. Washington, making it harder for him, but at the same time, he has Gerald and Ms. Hansen helping him make it and in the end, these three characters develop more and fight off their demons, if they had any, while Washington is left drowning and still the same character with zero forms of improving or maturing. So, overall the novel is about maturing and having things that occur in life and learning from them and using them to develop, but for many characters, like Washington, that sort of thing did not happen even when he had this whole timeline to do so. The Fall of Rome is a novel that follows the perspective of a kid named Rashid and other characters who go to a predominantly all-white school. The story takes place predominantly in Chelsea School. In the story we see Rashid go through major character-defining events that conflict with himself as well as the people around him. The story also follows two other Characters, Mr. Washington and Ms. Hansen. The story isn't that complex however the reason as to why these characters do the things they do can be viewed in that way. At its core I believe that the novel is about acceptance. This is seen from all the 3 main characters having something from the past they are trying to "run" from. With Rashid and Mr. Washington both dealing with the deaths of there brothers and Ms. Hansen from her past relationship. They all came to Chelsea to try and heal and escape there past to start a new. Throughout the novel they do exactly that and in the end Rashid is healed, Ms.Hansen accepts she wont be finding a lover and must focus on helping her students and Mr.Washington accepting the wrong he has done.
