refusal to read or read aloud, School had SSR (silent sustained reading) during Homeroom three times a week and some kids always conveniently happen to choose the ipad every time.

A characteristic I've noticed in my placement is kids avoid reading for pleasure. Most of them got used to reading novels through audio.

I have a 1st grade student that just doesn't seem to be able to learn letters or their sounds. He avoids ELA content as much as possible

Act out when it is reading time -- for instance, leaving the classroom, crying, etc.

Most of students avoid reading for pleasure or reading aloud. When they do read they shut down and or stop reading due to the lack of morphological knowledge (awareness of word structure and knowledge of prefixes and suffixes) to support reading accuracy and fluency.

I don’t think any of my students have dyslexia but I could draw attention to a lack of motivation, possibly. That would probably be a stretch.

When I have the opportunity to work 1-on-1 with students who are struggling, I've found that they are sometimes still unwilling to read aloud.

During our snap(sight) word review every morning one of the students forgets how to pronounce "the", "am" and "is" even though we review about twice a day

There is a student in my 5th grade classroom who frequently makes spelling errors. Today, I saw "wich" for "which" and "shure" for "sure". Same student needs extra time during tests.

I see in one student that they continue to guess at words. He tends to read a word and then guess what the word is. For example, today he was reading and the word was "comprehend" and he said "compare". I also noticed that he spells words based on how they sound only - the video mentioned spelling friends as frens which he does.

One student has an extreme aversion to any work pertaining reading/writing. When he does write most of the spelling is phonological and many words are spelled wrong.

I think I see students who struggle with written exams/assignments, but do well with oral exams/assignments. I also see students who struggle with reading comprehension and avoid reading for pleasure..

I'm not aware of any particular students who are dyslexic but I am sure that I have a couple based on the statistics. I wonder how many of my students are diagnosed, and of that number, what age they were when diagnosed. At high school my biggest worry would be an undiagnosed student who is afraid to advocate for themselves because they have never had a teacher care to see if they are dealing with dyslexia.

I've seen half and half with 5th Grade kids who like to read for fun and kids who don't. A lot of them rather go on their laptops and play music or games! So I'm not sure if I've seen any of the defining characteristics or not...

Something I have seen my students struggle with are separating words into individual sounds, have difficulty learning letter sounds, rely on the pictures to read, and struggle to sound out one syllable words.
