The Soviet Union was the first country to send a man into space. On April 12, 1961, Yuri Gagarin was launched up in Vostok 1 and was the first person ever to be sent into space. It created competition because the Soviet Union made it to space first and the US didn’t want to lose this easily.

Why was president Kennedy’s proclamation of getting a man to the moon so important? What does this have to do with project Apollo?

It was important because President Kennedy thought that being the first to send a man to the moon would surely put them in the lead and win the space race. Project Apollo was the project that NASA started to get the man to the moon. The project was created by NASA after they listened to President Kennedy’s speech and what he wanted the spaceship to do.

What 3 comparisons could be made in technology in the present to the impact made by the space race?

One comparison in technology in the present is the international space station being created. This was revolutionary because it created sort of a home base floating around in space. And it even gets the spot of being the most expensive man-made object. Second, newer, reusable rockets have been created by Elon Musk's SpaceX program. They are satellite rockets that could be launched up into space and sent back down into Earth's atmosphere cleaning up space and creating less space junk. One final way the space race has been having access and technology to newer and bigger missions in space travel. SpaceX is planning to colonize the moon and NASA has launched one of their new telescopes earlier this year going farther than ever. That is how the space race has impacted space travel technology even to this day.
