Gothic literature focuses on morbid , mysterious and scary themes and settings. In a rose for Emily there is a paticular moody and forbiding atmosphere. The crumbling old mansion , a charchter desperate to stay her self in a rapid changing society.
Throughout the story Emily is described as weird and lonely “She looked bloated, like a body long submerged in motionless water, and of that pallid hue. Her eyes, lost in the fatty ridges of her face, looked like two small pieces of coal pressed into a lump of dough.” The townspeople at first thought Emily was in pain and was mourning when her father passed , but when 3 days passed and she was still saying her father was not dead they started to think the complete oposite. This sets up that she is not " normal " and that something is strange about her.

Another way this is potrayed throughout the story is through emilys house. Once used to be a beautiful mansion and is now a falling apart crumbling "shack" . All throughout the story there is comments about a ' closed dank smell". The odor adds the dark and mysterious atmosphere to the house.

Towards the end of the story Emily buys rat posion and asks for the best they have. This adds the feel of mystery , that something bad is going to happen. Lastly the main part that makes this story gothic literature , she has killed her lover. She murdered him to keep him with her and then hid his body. The most disturbing part of the whole story is when they find a gray hair and a indention on the pillow beside Homers body. Throuhout the story they say how emily is aging and getting older , so at the end you could connect that Emily layed next to her dead lover.
