Here’s a list of optimal trees and seeds for the garden, focusing on species known for their carbon sequestration abilities, suitable for urban and semi-arid environments like Sumgayit:

1. Trees for Carbon Dioxide Absorption:

1.1. Pomegranate (Punica granatum)

Why? Pomegranate trees are well-suited for dry climates and can thrive with minimal water. They also have a dense canopy that captures CO₂ and filters air pollutants effectively.

Additional Benefit: Besides carbon capture, they produce edible fruit that benefits the local community.

Source: National Park Service – Pomegranate

1.2. Olive Tree (Olea europaea)

Why? Olive trees are excellent in arid climates, tolerant to drought, and can capture substantial amounts of CO₂ over their long lifespan. Their leaves also have air-purifying properties.

Additional Benefit: Olive oil production offers local economic opportunities.

Source: Olive Tree Global

1.3. Acacia (Acacia spp.)

Why? Known for its drought tolerance, the acacia tree sequesters carbon efficiently. It is particularly suitable for arid environments and has a dense canopy.

Additional Benefit: Some species of acacia provide nitrogen-fixing benefits, improving soil fertility.

Source: FAO – Acacia Trees for Carbon Sequestration

1.4. Mulberry (Morus alba)

Why? Mulberry trees grow quickly and can sequester CO₂ at a fast rate. They also have large leaves that contribute to carbon uptake.

Additional Benefit: Mulberries are useful in urban agriculture for food and support wildlife.

Source: US Forest Service – Morus alba

Sunflower (Helianthus annuus)

While annuals like sunflowers don’t sequester as much carbon as trees, they grow rapidly and have an impressive rate of photosynthesis. They also attract pollinators, which supports local biodiversity.

Lavender (Lavandula spp.)

Lavender is a hardy, drought-tolerant plant that captures CO₂ and has air-purifying properties. It’s also known for attracting bees and butterflies.

Provides aromatic flowers that improve the environment aesthetically.

Wildflowers (Native Pollinator Plants)

Native wildflowers can sequester carbon and contribute to a diverse ecosystem by attracting bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. They are also low-maintenance and well-adapted to local conditions.

Black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta), Coneflower (Echinacea purpurea), and Goldenrod (Solidago spp.)

Additional Carbon Sequestration Strategies for our Bus Stop Garden:

Climbing Plants: Incorporate vines like English ivy or grapevines that can grow on vertical surfaces of the bus stop. These will help cover more area and sequester additional carbon.

Perennials vs. Annuals: Choose perennials like sage or thyme that will grow back year after year, contributing to a continuous CO₂ capture system with less maintenance.

Trees like pomegranates, olive, and mulberries, combined with wildflowers and lavender, are optimal for your mini garden bus stop in Sumgayit. These species are drought-resistant, help absorb CO₂, and provide ecological benefits like pollinator support. By integrating vertical planting and efficient irrigation, you can create a sustainable, carbon-reducing space.
