Fruits and Vegetables

5) Food production and waste can lead to high carbon emissions in several ways. Firstly, the use of fossil fuels for machinery, transportation, and processing in the production of food can contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. Secondly, when food is wasted and ends up in landfills, it decomposes and produces methane, a potent greenhouse gas that is about 28 times more powerful than carbon dioxide. Finally, the clearing of land for agriculture can lead to deforestation, which not only reduces the number of trees that absorb carbon dioxide but also releases stored carbon into the atmosphere.

However, estimates can vary depending on the definition and criteria used to define a food desert.

3) Historically, systemic racism and economic inequality have led to disinvestment in Black and Brown communities, which has resulted in limited access to grocery stores and an over-representation of fast-food chains.

4) 43,000 residents in Houston are without a car and live more than half a mile from a supermarket. If the city had an improved public transportation system, supermarkets would be more accessible to all.
