Hello! My name is Vanessa Rivera, but most people just call me Ness or Nessa. Some of my hobbies consist of baking, running, painting, and recently I joined a bowling league. When I am not practicing my bowling skills, you can find me at Starbucks making all your favorite drinks. I am the youngest of four and I LOVE Taco Bell!! This is my second year at Stan State and although I have yet to have a class on campus, I am enjoying my time here so far. Also, I am a Pre-Nursing major and hope to become a Labor and Delivery Travel Nurse after I graduate.

Sustainability to me would be to reduce waste and conserve Earth's natural resources. There are numerous ways to help make our Earth stay resourceful and beautiful without costing so much. Sustainability could be used in business, or even personal health in regards to maintaining one thing in place for a long period of time. For example, maintaining cash flow, corporation, or your mental/ physical/ emotional health. How I practice sustainability would be by recycling, using reusable products, and walking to nearby stores instead of driving.

The topic that I have chosen is The Loss of Biodiversity in Brazil and this topic will fall under the environment pillar of sustainability. This topic involves Brazilians, animals, and plant life. This topic will also be based on the rainforests in Brazil. This research is important because of habitat loss, extinction, industrial agricultural expansion, extreme hunting, and pollution. Biodiversity in Brazil has changed for the birds, reptiles, insects, fish, and mammals because now they have to adapt to their habitats that have been drastically destroyed and lack most of their natural resources. Human expansion and deforestation negatively impacted the rainforests in Brazil. This research is important to me because I want a future for generations to come. By keeping biodiversity in Brazil and other parts of the world allows us to flourish, and it will build a future for global sustainability. I hope to learn my part in sustaining biodiversity around me and being able to inform people on different ways they can contribute to help.

Blog #3: Rhetorical analysis and information literacy

For this blog assignment, I chose to analyze the article, "Toward a Corporate World Where Sustainability Is an Expectation, Not a Goal" by Christine Bader published by The Atlantic. In this article, Bader describes and investigates the sustainability sector of companies to educate on how companies can properly promote sustainability. She illustrates that there is no one in a company that has a job to primarily change the world. However, through the work of the employees, the world may become a better and a more sustainable place as well.

To convince the reader on sustainability the author used Logos a frequent amount. An example of this is when Bader added a statistic saying, “sustainability-related headcount has increased for 40 percent of the more than 5,600 companies they surveyed; postings for sustainability jobs in U.S. companies have risen from 300 in 2010 to 700 in 2014”. When displaying jobs that are explicitly centered around sustainability she used Logos in outside statistics from "GreenBiz.com" to promote logic in her argument. The statistics deepen the argument for the author and persuades the reader further.

Using the Information Literacy Framework I observed the valuable information given in this article is to inform the employee all the way to the CEO of their own duties in sustainability. In the article, the individuality of contribution in sustainability is a valued principle. The notion of working and having an impact bigger than yourself as a normal employee is the convincing nature of Bader's article.

Share Your Reading Strategy: My reading strategy was to first turn on the specific filters and use key words to help narrow down the amount of texts that would pop up. Next, I would start to read the titles that had anything to do with my research question. Lastly, after I found an article that had fit best, I would look to see if it had a summary that I could read first before skimming through the texts.

What Was Difficult About The Reading Process?: The reading process for the most part was fairly easy. There were a few words that I had to look up the meaning. Also, a few texts that had 20+ pages to go through, had zero summaries at the top. Lastly, a few texts said that I had to pay a subscription in order to it, which did not make any sense since I was using the CSU Stan Library.

What Helped?: For most of the texts that I had clicked on, they all had a short summary for viewers to read. This really helped and saved time so i could quickly weed out unnecessary texts that do not fit with my research question. Another thing that helped was the different filters and using "key words" to search through hundreds of texts.

What Questions Do You Still Have About The Reading?: For now I do not have any questions.

My narrative thesis: My narrative thesis is based on how building a sustainable rural economy can reduce the Amazon Rainforest's deforestation. My antithesis is that it is not only economy factors that play into deforestation but, infrastructure expansion and wood/agricultural expansion.

My counter-narrative: My counter-narrative is, bringing access to enhanced technology can significantly help reduce the deforestation issue. For example, there should be a more eco-friendly way of raising livestock.

How my counter-narrative can help solve the issue I am writing about: My counter-narrative can help solve the problem by bringing awareness to the multiple businesses who carry out a plan of logging trees in order to make room for commercial plantations, livestock, and agriculture. With a greater enhance of technology, citizens would be able to build eco-friendly facilities for their livestock, or go vegan. Another high demand would be sugar, and an alternative to this would be agave.

We are gathered here today to remember Karen's beautiful spirit which was taken from us on October 2, 2017, at 1:55 PM. Karen was a joy to be around and had a passion for gaining knowledge. For those who may not know me, I was Karen's closest friend Christine Knight. It was hard for me to write this eulogy because I just could not accept that my dearest friend is gone. While this was very shocking to us all, Karen would have still wanted us to celebrate her glorious life and accomplishments. Karen was a daughter, sister, aunt, friend, and mother to four amazing children. Karen enjoyed exercising, swimming, hiking, knitting, and photography throughout her life.

(Above are some of Karen's favorite pictures she has taken, and cherished them close to her heart.)

Karen also had a passion for teaching young adults skills on being an educated member of a community. Karen found the importance of sustainability and information literacy as a global citizen and decided to receive a teaching degree as an adult. She was a respected Professor at California State University Stanislaus and taught Critical Inquiry for eight years. I will always remember her drive to teach and being a light to her students. Every morning when she would step into her classroom, Karen would remind herself that she is living her dream. Let Karen's life be an example to each and every one of us, to never stop chasing our dreams and aspirations in our lives.

Karen's uplifting spirit left a mark on us that we will never forget. I thank you all for joining the Zandarski family and me in celebrating a sweet soul that was taken so fast from us.

At this time her family is very appreciative of your generous donations, prayers, kind words, and gifts and request for some respected time to mourn this tragic loss.

The Zandarski family would like to welcome you all to the burial of Karen at Lakewood Funeral Home & Lakewood Memorial Park, today October 10, 2017, at 1:30 PM.
