Surrounded though he was by the vast ocean, Shinji did not especially burn with impossible dreams of great adventure across the seas. His fisherman's conception of the sea was close to that of the farmer for his land.（pg19，21）

Mishima makes it clear that Shinji is not particularly intelligent, nor concerned much with the outside world at the outset of the novel. He does not have grandiose dreams or a burning desire to get off of the island. He does not seem interested in literature or politics, and spends his time daydreaming of his life goal of becoming a master fisherman like Jukichi. Even this dream, however, is relatively small, for he does not endeavor to sail the vast oceans and travel to exotic and unknown locales; rather, he enjoys knowing his own plot of sea the way a farmer knows his own plot of land.

“Some day let even such a person as me be granted a good-natured, beautiful bride ... say someone like Terukichi Miyata’s returned daughter” “But mightn’t the gods punish me for such a selfish prayer?” （chapter3） At the same instant he recalled, with a sinking heart, his own poor condition in life. The recollection made the girl whom he had stared at so closely only the day before seem very, very far away from him now.(Chapter2)

Shinji well knew how sharp the villagers' tongues could be. Hatsue promised not to tell. Thus their well-founded fear of the village's love of gossip changed what was but an innocent meeting into a thing of secrecy between the two of them.（Pg32）

In this isolated island.,there are not many entertainment opportunities for the villagers. So naturally, gossip bvecome their entertainment. Thus villagers spread the news to the jealous Yasuo and Chiyoko, that keeps Hatsue and Shinji apart. They knew that the difference in social class is an uncrossable mountain that is enough to seperate them a part. This is apparent at their first meeting, explained in this quote that both of them are aware of power of rumors that the village will be talking about their meeting, even though at the time it is rather innocent. since they are simply walking and talking outside the scope of what is proper and respectable. Therefore they decided to keep this meeting as a secret which is a foreshadow for the later part of the story.

But probably the way she brooded over her commonplace face as being so unlovely was just as presumptuous as if she had been convinced she was an utter beauty(Pg 58)

In the story,Chiyoko is young female who is encumbered by tremendously low self-esteem. She is deeply convinced that she has an ugly face; while this may not be entirely true. This belief of her ugliness is tied to her virginity leads her to commit deeds that result in seperating Shinji and Hatsue apart. However, eventually, she redeems herself by making her mother to convince Hatsue's father to allow the reunion of Shinji and Hatsue. Her action make her become one of the most compelling characters in the novel.Though the reason for her changes have a lot to do with Shinji giveing her what she has been waiting for—a compliment calling her pretty. This young girl's damaged ego is finally repaired.

"It's all because I'm poor," Shinji said.(Pg113)

The class structure in The Sound of Waves may not be dramatic, but it is definitely close to reality. There are both poor people as well as rich people that inhabit the island. Shinji and his family fall into the poorer, lower category, while Yasuo and Hatsue and her family become to the richer, higher class. The poor families live in small, smelly houses while the rich families are more luxurious And the difference in class is the main reason why Terukichi refuses to allow his daughter to see Shinji. Again supporting the reason for Shinji and Hatsue keeping their meeting as secret. In Terukichi's opinion, Shinji is a poor fisherman and is unworthy of ,his daughter,Hatsue, hence keeping them apart from Hatsue.Shinji is also ashamed for his background, maybe his fate as well, thus he uttered the words. He is aware of his poverty but refuses to seek sympathy from others. Remarkably, Shinji's abilities and virtues lead Terukichi to change his mind and allow Shinji to marry his daughter.

"The only thing that really counts in a man is his get-up-and-go. If he's got get-up-and-go he's a real man, and those are the kind of men we need here on Uta-jima. Family and money are all secondary."Pg（175）

The Sound of Waves has a heartwarming ending. Shinji and Hatsue's union is finally allowed and blessed by Terukichi Miyata, who explains, in this quote, that Shinji's poverty shall no longer concerning to him. The courage and strength the young man demonstrated on the ship proved that he is a real man. His independence, responsibilities ,spirit of sacrificeing, these values are way more important than his background. Terukichi explains that the island needs more men like Shinji and he knows that certain qualities are more important than wealth.

This ending also link back to the quotes from Pg113 as Shinji"s abilities and value Terukichi changing his mind and allow Shinji to marry his daughter. The boundaries and the mountain between the classes are finally broke in the end of story.

If we link is ending with the qoutes and events happened in the story line of the book The sound of waves, is not hard for us to realise that the writer is combining realism and idealism together. He did mentioned the cruel reality of lovers suffer from different classes of poor and rich yet giving the story a nice ending of the boy manage to prove himself to the girl's parent and eventually permited to marriage, even though this still may not happen in real life.
