The Missouri Compromise was an example of the United States expanding West. As the country grew so did the issue of slavery. It established a latitude line separating Northern and Southern states, 36- 30.

Texas Anexxation

Texas joined the US before the civil war. This angered Mexico. They thought it was their land.

The Mexican-American war and Mexican Cession

Mexico Ceded this territory after they lost the war. It contained part of 7 different states.

Compromise of 1850

Territories could choose whether or not they had slavery. roughly half were slave states and half were free. This changes a bit later as the territories split into many more states.

Uncle Tom's Cabin

Showed the horrors of slavery. Angered Abolitionists even more. Pushed the North further toward war being an option.

Kansas-Nebraska Act and Bleeding Kansas

The Kansas-Nebraska Act became law on May 30, 1854. It got rid of the Missouri Compromise and created two new territories. People could vote on slavery, which led to violence called "Bleeding Kansas."

Dred Scott Decision

The Election of President Lincoln

South Carolina Secedes.

South Carolina leaves the US. They later create the Confederacy. Which other states quickly join.

Texas secedes and joins the Confederacy.
