With the divine interwoven throughout the Odyssey they're not all bound to be in Odysseus' favor. Case in point, Poseidon. After Odysseus had blinded Polyphemus, a cyclops and son of Poseidon, Polyphemus called on his father to derail Odysseus' journey back to Ithaca. In Odysseus' story Poseidon is one of many antagonists, enraged that Odysseus would blind his son. Throughout the Odyssey Poseidon would send storms to prevent Odysseus from returning home. Along with storms he would also lead Odysseus astray onto dangerous islands full of ravenous beasts. Because of Poseidon's meddling in his travels, Odysseus' trip was elongated by years. Only ending when the king of the Phaecians said, "For his sake Poseidon, shaker of the earth, although he does not kill Odysseus, yet drives him back from the land of his fathers." Poseidon was a patron to the Phaecians and therefore they could bring Odysseus home safely. In conclusion, Poseidon interferes with Odysseus' journey home by sending him to places that would cause harm, or more hopefully, death, to Odysseus and his men. All because Odysseus decided to brag about what he had done to Polyphemus.

One of the most well known Greek Gods is none other than Poseidon. Son of the king and queen of the titans, Cronus and Rhea, he was swallowed by his father. Cronus did this in fear of a prophecy that his children will one day overthrow him. Eventually, Poseidon was saved by his brother Zeus and him and his siblings defeated Cronus. At the end, Poseidon and his brothers, Zeus and Hades divided up the world into three parts. Poseidon drew the ocean and took control of the Sea. Poseidon was able to make "storms to sink ships or clear weather to help them along." One of Poseidon's most famous creations is the horse, which he made to impress the goddess Demeter. Speaking of other gods, Poseidon had a long standing rivalry with goddess Athena. Starting from when they both wanted to be the patron god of Athens. Both gods presented a gift to Athens, a horse from Poseidon, and an olive tree from Athena. Athena won which sparked a rivalry between the two. This later is brought up in the Odyssey, in which Athena favors Odysseus and Poseidon does everything in his power to derail Odysseus' way home.

In the Odyssey Poseidon represents the theme of vengeance. Throughout the tale Poseidon and Odysseus have a feud that stemmed from Odysseus blinding his son. Polyphemus had asked for his father's help in delaying Odysseus' journey home. Even though the fates had deemed that Odysseus was to return home safely, Poseidon did everything in his power to slow it down. Seeing as he couldn't kill Odysseus. Poseidon sent storms and monsters his way. Poseidon spends most of the epic fulfilling his son's wish for Odysseus to return home late with his spirit battered and broken. Poseidon's mission was to avenge his son after Odysseus had blinded him. That's why he represents the theme of vengeance in the Odyssey.
