In this picture, the person is experiencing a serious illness. Because of this illness, this will be out of a job for a long time, throwing off the income of a family. He has lived a marginal existence: adequate funds for food and a room in a single room occupancy hotel, but certainly not enough for savings. He is fired from his long-held kitchen job because he cannot see the food stains on the dishes; after working 2 days as a messenger, he is let go because items were delivered to incorrect addresses. Mr. Barnam has eye cataracts, a frequent accompaniment of older age and treatable with ambulatory surgery for those patients with health insurance. Mr. Barnam's marginal income entitles him to Medicaid benefits, but he is unable to negotiate the public welfare system and has no one to guide him through forms, appointments, and examinations. Upon losing his hotel room, Mr. Barnam goes to a shelter for homeless men after he is discovered at a bus station by outreach workers. However, even there, his health problem remains troublesome: he almost loses his bed because he fails to sign a daily bed roster he cannot see.

He had two jobs but was fired because of his cataracts. It is something that James has dealt with every day for 45 years. He tried his best to adapt but his lack of eyesight still affects his ability to perform at his many jobs. James did not have the money to remove his cataracts and was forced to move to a homeless shelter.

In this picture, the person is suffering from poverty because of structural reasons. They are in utter defeat at their hopelessness in this situation. In this picture, there is a person suffering from cataracts. One of his major problems is that he has no one to help guide him through the welfare system's many forms and appointments. One way this could be remedied is if he had a trusted friend that could guide him through it. This way, he would be able to negotiate and perhaps get his cataract removal surgery covered under welfare and he could leave the homeless shelter and live the most of the rest of his life as he can, with his vision and hard-working mentality intact.  

In this picture, a homeless person is giving back to the community, making friends with locals. By doing this, the homeless person is making various connections to the people of the community.
