Our solidarity in that letter, our solidarity in that meeting.... it was powerful.

Jannelle represented herself well, but, no doubt, she was in the hot seat. It was clearly not a comfortable position for her, even though she performs well in situations like this. She knew she needed to answer to a powerful, solid group.

That said, I appreciated the statements that were made around the members of this group representing the 400+ members of the ERGs, not just ourselves as individuals. Again, that's a lot of power. We have a lot of responsibility here. I'm definitely thinking about how the BDN Allies leaders should be at service to and speaking for the BDN Allies... as well as, of course, at service to the BDN and in solidarity with the rest of the ERGs.

I think it is important when a leader appeals to us in the space of their own beliefs and values it is important to push back on the fact that they are representing more than just themselves, as are we. 

Thinking about next steps for our group. There was previous discussion of our moving forward with certain initiatives outside the DEI Council. I like the idea of ERG leadership meeting outside of these monthly check ins w/ Jannelle and the DEI Council but also sensitive to the time commitment. 

Also thinking that it will be important for DEI Council ERG Reps to have structures to pass back information and collect feedback from ERG membership so that they are truly speaking for their ERG. This is fairly straightforward for CIRCLE given we decide by consensus and have relatively low membership. My sense is good, they should have been doing it all along. However I also know there is a terrible track record and worry about them taking over and doing things badly things that are of profound importance to us. Wondering what the ERGs look like in that new world order. What do we want and need for ourselves? And what is the role of allies to each ERG and to the agency as a whole.

And I understand the reasons why that particular information can't be shared. But who makes the decisions around what information can and can't be shared? If WestEd is just going to hide behind legal precautions, how can we get to real transparency and trust?
