In the Western world, owning and exploiting the Earth and its resources is in their cosmogony, the center of the spiritual belief.  According to Genesis man is to subdue and have dominion over the Earth. At the core of the Western belief the Earth and everything in it is for mankind to own and exploit.
In the Hawaiian mind, land cannot be owned. If anything the land owns us. We are the younger sibling, our duty is to love, honor and serve. The land is not something to exploit for profit. We aloha the ʻāina because it is our ʻohana. No one can own the ʻāina or kai, like no one can own the air we breathe. It is our kuleana, our responsibility to care for the Earth for time we are here.
