Located in front of St Anna Residence at the Gozo General Hospital, the community

garden serves as a unique outdoor classroom where students, educators, parents, the elderly and hospital staff come together to share knowledge, grow food and build community bonds.

This intergenerational and intercultural initiative promotes hands-on, cross-curricular STEAM learning while supporting biodiversity, eco-friendly gardening practices and community engagement.

Students from Nazareth Baptist School, Nazareth presented an idea to improve public spaces in their city by changing the surface materials of sidewalks, based on data they collected using the GLOBE Urban Heat Island protocol. Their research was translated into concrete recommendations for reducing heat stress in the city, which were submitted to the Mayor of Nazareth.

Following the conference, the students’ work and key outcomes were presented at a special ceremony at the President’s Residence in Jerusalem, highlighting the important role of youth in shaping our climate future.

As part of a professional development course, 14 kindergarten teachers learned about the GLOBE program, STEM pedagogy for early childhood, the atmosphere, clouds, and the principles of citizen science. They received a practical toolkit – lesson plans, observation sheets, and age-appropriate teaching materials – and led a pilot in 14 kindergartens, integrating the program into their daily work with children

Twelve delegations of students and teachers from Italy, Slovenia, Czechia, Slovakia, and Belgium - a total of 70 students and teachers grouped into 6 teams - took part in scientific and environmental monitoring activities focused on water, microplastics, biodiversity, soil characterization, carbon storage in monumental trees with special attention to climate and environmental challenges like wildfires.

Hosted at the Civil Protection headquarters in Palmanova, the expedition was held in several locations around Gorizia and Nova Gorica where the teams shared data, experiences, and discoveries — culminating in a symbolic gathering in Piazza della Transalpina, the square uniting Nova Gorica and Gorizia, now together European Capital of Culture 2025, under the inspiring slogan GO! BORDERLESS.

Held under the patronage of the Ministry for the Environment and the Municipality of Gorizia, supported by the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, the Science Learning Expedition 2025 was realized thanks to the partnership and collaboration of the Di4A -University of Udine, CREA-Gorizia, GLOBE Europe and Eurasia Regional Office (Praga-CZ); CSOD-Center šolskih in obšolskih dejavnosti (Ljubljana), ISIS BASSA FRIULANA - Cervignano del Friuli (UD), with contributions from numerous local institutions, schools, and volunteers.

These are some of the objectives of the exhibition-event "THE TORMENTS OF POSEIDON. Microplastics in the Hydrosphere", on display from February 20 to March 16, 2025 in the magnificent exhibition venue of the Caserma Montesanto in Palmanova (Udine, Italy), granted for the occasion by the local Municipal Administration, a partner of the project, and funded by the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region.

A key element of the success was the constant presence of groups of students from the ISIS Bassa Friulana, specially trained for the purpose, who served as guides, and four teachers from the GLOBE Italia APS Association who coordinated them.

Together with scientist from Groningen University and the Plastic Soup Foundation we will set up a project for the next 3 years thanks to dutch funding for STEM education.

Students will:

• measure how much textile fibers will release

• measure how much textile fibers can be found in the air of the classroom

• become aware of the role fast fashion plays in microplastics in the air.

• become aware of the complete supply chain of the clothing industry

We will focus on:

• finding cofunding from local governments

• setting up a protocol

• finding pilotschools

Are you interested to coöperate? We will focus on setting up the dutch project for now, but hopefully in the future it would be nice to share knowlegde and cooperate between schools in different countries.

Students measure Air Quality with the snifferbike, remains a great succes!

Thanks to the funding of more than 30 local municipalities we can support more than 70 schools with snifferbike and NO2 diffusion tubes, lessonmaterials and guest lessons at their school.

Especially the meetings where students present their results to policy makers are a great success.

AQ Campaign

Seven schools presented, representing Ghana, Ireland, Malta, Mauritius and South Africa, and many others attended as spectators. We also heard from two Irish experts on climate change and urban climates.

The webinar was a great success! It highlighted how different countries are facing different threats from climate change. While student in Ireland rarely measure surface temperatures above 30°C in the summer, the school in Ghana measured asphalt temperatures as high as 60°C next to their classrooms in the Autumn!

15 student groups shared scientific presentations, videos, artwork, and poems to an audience of approximately 130 participants, that included teachers, students, experts, EPA partners, GLOBE Ireland coordinators and An Taisce staff.

Community Water Officers from LAWPRO (Local Authority Waters Programme) came baring gifts as seven winning Rainfall and Flooding Campaign schools were awarded €500—€1000 grants.

The Department of Environment, Climate and Communications Air Quality Unit presented anti-idling signs to seven winning Air Quality schools too.

It was a lovely day of science, communication and awards!

Throughout the two days, students shared investigations into air quality, water and soil health, biodiversity, microplastics and other pressing environmental issues. They took part in a lively Project Marketplace, engaged in hands-on workshops with scientists, and benefitted from the perspectives of peers from several different countries.

GLOBE creates opportunities for every student to become a young scientist – to observe the world, measure, explore, and discover connections between nature, weather, and the environment. This hands-on, inquiry-based approach allows children who may not excel in traditional lessons to shine through their curiosity, observation skills, and desire to discover.

At the Elementary School in Blatné Remety, a fully Roma school, teachers systematically work with GLOBE protocols and engage students in international activities. Thanks to their dedication, children from a small rural community have become part of a worldwide network of young citizen scientists.

At the Vocational School in Bielá Voda, students with special educational needs conduct phenological observations, monitoring the seasonal changes in plants and nature throughout the year. Learning thus becomes meaningful, hands-on, and connected to real life.

The Elementary School in Plavecký Štvrtok motivates its students to explore new partnerships and research topics through GLOBE – from studying microplastics in water to participating in international environmental campaigns.

Nearly 20 Slovak schools participating in the GLOBE Program joined the Populair project, focusing on raising awareness about air quality.
Over several weeks, students used ATMOTUBE portable sensors to measure concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 particles around their schools, in playgrounds, and even on their way to and from school.

These measurements allowed them to compare air quality in different environments – near roads, in green areas, or inside school buildings – and to understand what influences the air we breathe.
Students processed and visualized their data and discussed how they could contribute to a cleaner, healthier environment in their communities.

Their findings were presented at the GLOBE Inquiry-Based Student Conference, where they showcased not only measurement results but also their own ideas for improvement – from planting trees to raising awareness about pollution.
Some teams presented in person, while others joined online, highlighting the collaborative spirit of the GLOBE community.

This initiative proved that even small-scale measurements can lead to big discoveries – and that students who explore their environment learn not only about science but also about responsibility and active citizenship.

To provide inspiration and practical support, a Science Fair was held in Eupen for secondary school teachers as well as interested primary school teachers.

During the event, the GLOBE Programme was introduced, along with a variety of project ideas such as phenology, weather and climate, microplastics…. This event also offered valuable discussions and exchanges with teachers to help them implement projects in their schools.

It was an inspiring afternoon full of creativity, collaboration, and enriching encounters!

Highlights:

• The morning began with registration and a warm welcome, followed by a “world café” style exchange where attendees shared both the challenges and opportunities faced when implementing GLOBE measurement protocols in their institutions.

• The programme featured two thematic sections of good practice:

  1. For the youngest learners (pre-school and early primary): exploring weather, leaf observations and the first GLOBE protocols.

  2. For older students: engaging in water-source investigations, outdoor fieldwork and scientific measurement activities. ekosola.si

• Outdoor games and hands-on activities underpinned the idea that science, nature and learning merge naturally when we step outside the classroom.

• Participants left with not only new knowledge but also new professional networks and renewed motivation to bring GLOBE into everyday learning.

On 16–19 August, the GLOBE Estonia Learning Expedition took place in Jõulumäe, bringing together nearly 100 members of the GLOBE community from Estonia along with guests from Limbaži, Latvia. Over 4 days, participants explored the diverse natural environment of Jõulumäe, carried out measurements based on GLOBE protocols, and reflected on the role of science and environmental education. 

This was not the first time Jõulumäe hosted a GLOBE expedition—similar events were held 7 and 14 years ago. A distinctive focus of this year’s expedition was on observing change; the data collected was compared with earlier results to gain a better understanding of the region’s development and environmental dynamics.
