Post Two: Video One National Geographic Documentary On Atlantis 2015

In the video below you will see a documentary released back 2015 by National Geographic regarding the lost city of Atlantis. Through out the documentary National Geographic introduces you to many different geologist, and scientist who have spent their life looking for Atlantis. The video goes into detail speaking of where Plato said Atlantis maybe, where science has lead us, and shows us how mysterious Atlantis still is.

Through out the video you hear a lot of solid information but in the end, it is all still a mystery. The only reason we believe and look for Atlantis is Plato, there is no other writing or true proof of Atlantis. Well watching the one hour documentary by National Geographic you see a couple different red flags and can point out some reasons for belief. Lets review some of the ones I found in this video:

· Appeal to authority- We see this is many was in the scenes they use “scientists and geologist” to make the information more believable. Another appeal to authority I find is the use of Plato, the world hold Plato to this almost god like power.

· Ancient Wisdom- they documentary talks a lot about the ancient wisdom of the Atlantis people and what they may have possibly created which was described by Plato. There was said to be a “ancient wisdom” about the way at which Atlantis was build like a puzzle, set up of canals to a central hub.

· Confirmed Bias – this documentary does have a confirmed bias, it does not ever talk about the possibility of Atlantis not being real only a made-up story, it only talks about where Atlantis maybe. There also seams to be a deep love and commitment from all the professionals involved in the documentary which would lead me to believe they are bias to only believe in Atlantis, they are determined to prove it existed and find remains.

· Proof of Verbosity- the movie gives you a large amount of information like massive amount, it almost confuses you, it is more likely to make someone believe that is documentary is 100% correct and that Atlantis must be in one of the spots the speak of.

· Some common reasons one may believe this video and fall for these red flags is simplicity (it is just easier), agenticity (Plato), unexplained (the mystery) and emotional connection (like the scientist in the video they have invested their life into finding or discovering new things about Atlantis.

I would more definitely recommend watching this documentary, though you will be able to see the red flags at time it is very interesting and informative at the same time.

If you noticed both all these photos have a similar circular pattern, with a central middle hub, this is said to be how Atlantis was set up. This is also a way geologist try to use to figure out if a certain place may or may not be Atlantis. Plato left very detailed measurements, and drawling’s of what Atlantis looks like. It is said if a place was to match the Atlantean cross that is very well could be Atlantis. Throughout civilization through many different civilizations have used the Atlantean Cross in some way or another claiming to be ancestors of the great Atlanteans.

When looking at some thing like the Atlantean Cross we can connect a couple of Red Flags:

· Appeal to authority- the fact that Plato said it makes it appeal to authority it self, like I said in post one he is hold to an almost gold like position.

· Ancient Wisdom- the Atlanteans were extremely intelligent and had this wisdom to make such a symbol to represent their civilization like a map.

We can also see a couple reasons at which someone may believe in the Atlantean Cross. One is patternicity over time there have been areas of land and even areas under water which have represented or seemed to look like the Atlantean Cross meaning it could possibility be Atlantis, and the fact that Plato said it we have Agenticity as a reason for belief.

For my first article, I pick a article from National Geographic written by Willie Drye. This article starts off with speaking of the story of Atlantis but that is not why I choose it; towards the end of the article they speak of a scientist James Romm who believe that Plato may have in a way made up the story. In a way like Greek mythology and Olympus Romm believes Plato made up Atlantis to show the morals, spirituality he had and other theories that he believed. This is a very legitimate theory as there is no real proof that Atlantes exists, they have also yet to find it, so is it really real? Plato was the only person how had told the story of Atlantes and truly could have bent it any way he wanted. It was said Atlantes was to represent a utopia a place where all was perfect.

Some reasons for belief of this would be one the fact it was written by national geographic which would be like an agent, another big reason a lot of people would believe this as it makes sense, there is no scientific proof that Atlantis existed so it is just simpler to believe. The article is very well written and has very little holes. Some red flags I found in the article are appeal to authority and idiotically supported.

Plato from classic Grease a philosopher who wrote all that we know about Atlantis! Though Atlantis is not the only thing Plato wrote about it is what we are focusing on. Plato brought us a lot of information such as a possible map written out in word, a very extremely detailed deception of what Atlantis possible looking and culture facts and so much more. It is said that the Egyptians told Plato and he wrote down the store which was then translated 2 different times which in different languages it is said. Plato is held to a very high standard and was a great philosopher of his time know for many great stories, bring a lot of history to light for modern day people through his writing of history and mysteries.

Red flags in regards to Plato:

· Appeal to authority- Plato holds a sort of power of authority role, there are many that look up to him. This means a lot more people are willing to believe anything he said, so even if there was no solid evidence people would go looking, they followed him and held him to an almost god like status. He wrote of Atlantis people went searching.

· Ancient Wisdom- Plato had a type of ancient to him he was around long ago dying in 348 BC. He told many great stories, and because of this wisdom people where more likely to follow him in his story of Atlantis.

Common Reasons for believing Plato about Atlantis:

· Agenticity- Plato is a agent and a almost god life figure, people are more likely to believe him.

· Simplicity- it is easier just to believe then to say he could be wrong about this one thing.

Post Six: Video Two Naked Science

This video is from Naked Science it is a 1 hour documentary about Atlantis. The main point of the video I would like to talk about it the connection the Naked Science scientist made about the Atlanteans using stars, and mapping the world using stars. They call them original astronomers; they believe the Atlantis people uses specific almost bow shaped like tools to measure stars from earth to help map were they where. This leads into another theory of the video that which is the fact that means Atlantis could be more then one place, it could have been multiple, as they may have used this to measure across the seas, and take great travels to leave among many ports. The video also talks about Plato, and many other theories of Atlantis but the one I wanted to focus on was the tracking of the stars for this one.

Some red flags I have connected with this Documentary from Naked Science would be:

· Appeal to authority- the documentary shows many different official looking personal such as astronomers, geologists, scientist, and much more. This gives the movie more validation when it makes claims such as they were trackers of the stars, which is very possible though because other cavillations have done this as well I believe the Mayans and the Egyptians would be an example.

· Ancient wisdom- the Atlanteans had this ancient wisdom stamina already around them, so something like them being so wise and reading the stars to track the land is very believable. This ancient wisdom is something that is also more likely to make someone believe, but the only information we are going on is Plato’s and his alone and guesses of modern day scientist.

You can also make a couple of connections for reason for belief such as simplicity it is easier to just believe they tracked the stars rather then they sailed and hoped to live, and that the waters were safe, like many other of their times. However its easier just to believe to documentary and say “ yes that is what they did they tracked the stars”. You can also say Agenticity is also a reason for belief due to the authority figures in the more. Another connection I could make was unexplained as it is truly unexplained and no one knows but Plato and know one will truly ever know if he is telling the truth.

This article I found very interesting, I had posted it on my padlet as when I was discussing with a co-worker about my assignment they mentioned they love Atlantis, she also mentioned a theory that Atlantis could have been destroyed by alien invaders which I though was so far out there and had huge red flags to me. So I did a little bit of research and turns out this is very much so a theory some believe to be true. The Russians according to this article believe the theory of a nuclear destruction by aliens. Now myself I do not believe in aliens but I know many people do which is why I included this in my padlet.

Some common reasons for belief I see within this theory and article would be agenticity using the aliens as form of a agent, and the article makes the Russians their agent, and unexplained. Many people believe in the possibility of other life forms so the unexplained of aliens will cause some to believe. I also believe some people have a bias towards aliens and will be more likely to believe almost like a emotional connection in a way.

Red flags to me for this theory and article would be many of them. Appeal to authority is one I would say for the article as I know it does not come from the best sours but refers to the Russians, and for others an alien is also like an agent. Another one would be common bias, a lot of people are bias towards aliens as I said before.

The story says that beyond the pillars of Hercules lays Atlantis. This would put it out in what is now known as the Atlantic Ocean. The was also part of Plato’s story of Atlantis which sent many scientist searching for miles within the Atlantic Ocean and along the coast.

A red flag I believe for this would be again one at which is common in a lot of my cost but appeal to authority as Plato had been the one to say if was beyond the pillars of Hercules. Another red flag could be confirmation bias which would be what would cause the scientists to run looking, the scientists and the geologist go running to the places Plato speaks of such as Atlantis, such as the pillars of Hercules due to their confirmation bias of their belief in Plato.

Some reasons for believing that Atlantis may lay beyond the pillars of Hercules is simplicity, it is easier to believe in the story Plato had told.

This article was also posted by history.com which is a more reliable news source. This theory to some would be very believable as long as believed in the Bermuda triangle.

Some reasons for believe would be simplicity, and unexplained. I believe the red flags for this article would be the appeal to authority with the use of the Donnelly being scientist to believe this theory, and I also believe people with common bias to the Bermuda triangle will also believe this theory. We will truly never know If the Bermuda triangle really did or did not take Atlantis.

For my third video, I decided to have a little bit of fun and I choose a Disney movie. I wanted to show from even a young age kids have an idea about what they think Atlantis maybe and how this utopia civilization was portrayed as to almost be a higher standard to strive for. In this movie, the city of Atlantis has almost alien like technology well beyond what we in modern day society strive for, such as vehicles that hover, and laser like weapons. At the same time the people and the layout of the city has a ancient feeling to it. This movie gives kids an impression as to what at Atlantis in the minds of Disney may have been like.

For this I am going to talk about why kids believe and their common reasons for belief. Children are very impressionable and will believe almost anything. This version of Atlantis is very farfetched and into the future but still ancient in a way. Simplicity is in believing in what they are told as children is easier then trying to sort out what is right from wrong for them selves. They do not yet know how to tell fiction from non-fiction and will believe this movie based on their lack of knowledge due to age. Agenticity is another reason as Disney is a big deal to kids, they believe in Disney, the magic the excitement, they trust Disney and will believe if this is how Atlantis was this is how it was. I also believe this as ties in with the common reason for belief emotional connection as they love Disney.

Some red flags in this movie, one big one to an adult is there is really no proof, no agent such as a scientist, but to a kid it’s a different world. The movie to an adult as a common bias to a futuristic advance world, well using the spin of ancient wisdom to make people believe more. This movie is a big bad of red flags based of the fact it is a movie.
