Drawn Animation

What is it?

It is an animation technique where each frame is drawn by hand. The technique was the dominant form of animation in cinema until the advent of computer animation.

Give a brief history of the technique:

Early examples of attempts to capture the phenomenon of motion into a still drawing can be found in paleolithic cave paintings, where animals are often depicted with multiple legs in superimposed positions.

It has been claimed that these superimposed figures were intended for a form of animation with the flickering light of the flames of a fire or a passing torch illuminating different parts of the painted rock wall, revealing different parts of the motion.

Give two examples of movies that still use this:

1. Most anime movies
2. The latest hand drawn Disney movie is The Lion King(1994)

Advantages of this technique:

Complete control over the animation.

Disadvantages:

Takes a lot of time an effort

What is cel-animation?

The cel is an important innovation to traditional animation, as it allows some parts of each frame to be repeated from frame to frame, thus saving labor. A simple example would be a scene with two characters on screen, one of which is talking and the other standing silently. Since the latter character is not moving, it can be displayed in this scene using only one drawing, on one cel, while multiple drawings on multiple cels are used to animate the speaking character.

What is Rotoscoping?

Rotoscoping is an animation technique used by animators to trace over motion picture footage, frame by frame, when realistic action is required

Cut-out Animation

What is "Cut-out animation"?
Cutout animation is pretty much exactly what it sounds like: cutout shapes arranged on a flat surface, and manually moved and repositioned to simulate animation. Cutouts can be colored paper, white paper with drawings on it, even photographs, and can be completely flat or can sometimes be 3D objects, though this ventures away from cutout animation and into stop-motion animation.

Example of Film:
South Park
Twice Upon a Time (1983)

Advantages of this technique:
-Solo animator, requires many fewer drawings than full cel animation. Animators can design the cut-out pieces themselves, so the range of subject matter is limited only by their imagination.

Disadvantages of this technique:
-2-D shapes make smooth, fluid movement, particularly movement toward or away from the camera difficult to achieve. Any detail applied to a cut-out shape limit the angle at which an animator can take a picture of it. Cut-out animation doesn't work well for facial close-ups, requires the lip movements of a character to synchronized with recorded sounds. Typically used for mimed stories with duration of five minutes of less.

What is stop-animation?
Stop motion animation is a technique used in animation to bring static object to life on screen. By moving the object in increments while filming a frame per increment. When all frames are played in sequence it shows movement. Clay figures, puppets and miniatures are often used in stop motion animation as they can be handled and re-positioned easily.

anime = me_irl
