Relates the creation of mental instability to the tradition of patriarchal control. This is seen in Glaspells “Trifles” through the eyes of an oppressed wife. Under the weight of her husbands control, Mrs. Wright suffers a mental collapse and commits murder to escape her husbands control of her life.

The Difference Women Make on the Battlefield

Discusses the new militia of women “on” the battleground in war. Gayle Tzemach Lemmon is a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations and writes of a new design in which women are viewed and utilized as a valuable asset during times of war as they offer skills and abilities men do not. Lemmon tells readers how governments are implementing special-ops teams that create an equal male-female partnership. Connecting Lemmon's account of women in battle to Mrs. Wright in battle at home, Lemmon’s story contrasts the traditional ideology in Glaspells “Trifles.” Inspires the question of how the outcome would have been different if Mrs. Wright had access to equal treatment from her husband.

A beautiful example of chosen silence as opposed to the forced silence often displayed in patriarchal relations at home. Mrs. Wrights friends resolve to remain silent about their findings in order to protect their friend. Glaspell uses this dramatic irony to highlight how men, who are usually the authoritarian, are generally unaware of what is going on in the lives of them women they hold control over.

A video from Study.com outlines the differences between men's and women's prisons. The idea that women's prisons do not require the same level of security is significant to "Trifles." This video implies that women are weaker than men, which we find is not entirely true in Glaspell's play because it is Mrs. Wright who successfully murders her husband. The hidden theme implies that society under estimates women, which Glaspell also proves to be false by using the women to solve the crime.
