         <description><![CDATA[<p>Greeks rise against Ottoman rule, inspired by the Enlightenment and revolutionary ideals to create an independent nation-state.</p><p>The revolution gained support from European intellectuals and powers in a movement called Philhellenism (Lord Byron, Charles Nicolas Fabvier, Victor Hugo, Alexander Pushkin).</p><p>This shows how revolutions became pan-European causes.</p><p><br/></p><p><em>Impact:</em> First successful national revolution in 19th-century Europe influencing later Balkan and Italian movements for independence.</p>]]></description>

         <title>1848-1849: The Springtime of Nations (Europe-wide)</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Revolutions erupt in France, the German states, the Austrian Empire, Italy and in other states of Europe. They are truly a continent-wide series of revolts calling for democracy, workers’ rights, constitutional reform and national unification.</p><p><br/></p><p>French Second Republic, Frankfurt National Assembly,  Hungarians demanded autonomy, Czechs sought greater rights in Bohemia, nationalist movements arose among Croats, Serbs, Romanians, Italian nationalists sought to eliminate Austrian control in Italy, the end of absolute monarchy in Denmark, introduction of representative democracy in the Netherlands.</p><p><br/></p><p><em>Impact:</em> Although most fail, they set the stage for political and social liberalization. </p><p>The 1848 revolutions connected political, social, and national causes for the first time. It's an early version of the cross-European solidarity that would reappear in the later 20th century protests.</p>]]></description>
