“I know. Is waiting for a car to stop, a star to fall, someone to change her life.“

(Cisneros 27)

The importance of this quote is that is uses symbolism. Symbolism is very important to the theme of a novel because it is some of the hidden evidence that is needed to determine it. This quote speaks about how Marin is waiting for some boy to sweep her off her feet, and change her life. But, as the readers know, and the character herself knows that she is a hopeless romantic, and that what she hopes for will never come true. The star symbolizes her dreams and hopes.

The Use of Figurative Language

The most common form of figurative language used in "Marin" is symbolism. Throughout the novel, and the vignette, symbolism is used to show what Cisneros is really thinking, or the true meaning of her writing.

The true meaning of Cisneros' writing is the reason we chose never growing up to be the main theme of the vignette. While she talks about Marin, she channels her thoughts about a young girl, who wants to be noticed, who wants to dream, and fly, but is tied down by her family, and her needs.

“I am in love with those two green apples you call eyes” (Cisneros 27)

This vignette is a metaphor used to describe how beautiful Marin's eyes were. This was in the context of some boys "cat calling" Marin. This quote helps Cisneros emphasize the theme by showing how Marin intentionally sits in front of her house and gets compliments from boys, because she is waiting for someone to say something nice, because she doesn't hear much of that in the house she lives in.

In this vignette Marin uses a lot of symbolism. She talks about how she is going to go to Puerto Rico and get married to her boyfriend. She also speaks about things she has learned in her experiences.

The topics that are discussed in this are hope, and waiting on a dream that will never come true.
