The theme or message of the poem is loneliness due to the absence or neglect of a loved one. The reader learns that this kind of loneliness is deep, although some may use it for show. The reader learns specific examples of both from the Odyssey with Penelope feeling true sorrow and loneliness, while Odysseus uses it as more of a public show of emotion than true feeling.

Imagery

Imagery is used in Millay's poem when she writes, "I wiped my eyes on the corner of my apron,"(1-2). The reader can picture this moment of loneliness and sorrow. In addition the part that says,"when you think it will never be light,"(8), which visualizes the loneliness that both the narrator and Penelope feel in this dark moment. Another piece of imagery is,"Suddenly you burst into tears,"(10) which shows another image of utter sorrow, hopelessness, and loneliness, as if Penelope's heart is broken.

Metaphor

The metaphor of the ancient gesture is meant to show the loneliness of Penelope and others throughout the ages. The 'ancient gesture' of crying is used to be a symbol for loneliness and the physical manifesting of such. The author mentions that this gesture is both performed heartfeltly, as Penelope did, and for show, as Ulysses(Odysseus) does. The 'ancient gesture' that the author is talking about is crying, which is the gesture all of us use to show emotion such as sadness, misery, or, in this case, loneliness.

This poem is different than the Odyssey because it focuses on Penelope and shows Odysseus in a less heroic light. This poem makes the reader feel bad for Penelope more than Odysseus and also brings up the point that Odysseus may not have been as true and sincere as he is shown in the Odyssey. In addition, the poem does not really talk about Odysseus' feelings at all, and focuses entirely on Penelope's feelings of loneliness.
