Speaking your Truth- When it comes to mental wellness in the early years, speaking your truth is crucial to understand and support. Honesty promotes stronger connections and reassurance. A deep connection is needed in order for children to feel comfortable enough to share their feelings and express their emotions, which is the foundation for having positive mental health and well-being. Being truthful to yourself, as an educator allows for you to open up and help children in times of need. It also allows you to be your best self and provide the children with fun and engaging, everyday experiences which ultimately boosts moods and helps maintain positive mental health and well-being. Children learn from their surroundings; when educators speak their truth, and put forth their best self, the children will as well.

Human- As an early Childhood Educator being human means showing genuine care and empathy while recognizing the very real mental health challenges children face today. Ontario’s well-being strategy highlights the importance of treating mental health with the same urgency as physical health, especially given that 1 in 5 children experience mental health issues. In practice this means intentionally creating moments of connection in the classroom by pausing to comfort a child who seems withdrawn, listening without judgment, and offering practical child friendly tools like breathing exercises or a quiet space. These small human acts build trust and resilience, helping children feel seen and safe in environments that aren’t their comfort zones. By showing up everyday with empathy and responsiveness, educators play a very important role in the foundation of e wry child’s mental well-being.

Truth– Speaking openly with Safeguarding and Compassion

As an educator, “speaking your truth” implies crystallizing what you are cognizant of and what remains to be understood. As an educator, there was a time we had a child who had non-communicable disease such as diabetes, thus required special dietary treatment. It I must admit that endeavoring to partake in that unique reward process necessitated heavy research coupled by consultancy with medical practitioners. Henceforth, empathetic honesty achieved optima descriptive comprehension. That principle enhances healthy participation when educators embody integrity responsibility; flexible zeal aids educators. Truth facilitates flourishing alongside interdependent evolution in caring togetherness. As an example, While we were exploring food and nutrition, one child told me they had never seen or tasted some of the fruits we were offering. Hearing this made me realize just how much I was assuming about children’s exposure to foods. I acknowledged that my lesson planning overlooked household food scarcity and cultural dietary restrictions. I shared this realization with my mentor, asking for advice on developing more inclusive options moving forward. This experience taught me that being a teacher means constantly learning. Honesty regarding personal prejudices or knowledge gaps strengthens the ability to provide all children with equitable and purposeful opportunities.

Human – The Need For Vulnerability, Compassion, and Empathy

Being human opens the door for learning because it means practicing compassion and forgiving ourselves for missteps along the way. I recall an instance where I witnessed a child spill yogurt all over themselves. Instead of embarrassing or shaming them for their mistake, I calmly acknowledged their feelings and showed them how to clean up the mess. In that particular moment, children taught me the value of gentleness which makes a caring atmosphere possible. Educators not only show children emotional kindness but also recognize and respond with empathy while exercising authority. These simple gestures of understanding nurture self-esteem and healthy relationships in young learners.

During the activity, one child clearly became distressed when another child reacted with a grimace to the sight of their traditional lunch. That child then withdrew and pushed the meal away. Instead of reprimanding or correcting anyone at that moment, I sat next to the upset child and said, “That looks like something really special. Do you want to tell me about it?” As they described the voice brimming with joy how their grandmother prepared specially for them, I could see that their face indeed lit up. Later on, I guided group discussions on contending all types of food and how everyone’s meals deserve respect – clarifying in no uncertain terms why each person’s food is significant. This taught me how vital it is to exercise compassion. The human experience calls us to appreciate what lies beneath actions and be able turn routine moments into opportunities for empathy and inclusion.

P – Present As an Early Childhood Educator, being fully present means not only being physically there but emotionally and mentally engaged with each child’s developmental journey. During moments such as snack or lunchtime, I stay present by observing and engaging with children’s eating habits. For example, if a preschooler refuses to eat their vegetables and appears frustrated, I avoid rushing or scolding. Instead, I sit beside them, gently ask questions like, “What don’t you like about it today?” or “Can you show me what you’d like to try instead?” This allows me to be responsive to their needs in the moment. Being present also means recognizing when a child might be experiencing sleep deprivation or growth discomfort. If I notice a child seems especially tired, irritable, or withdrawn, I acknowledge their state and offer comfort by saying, “It looks like your body is telling you it needs some rest today. Would you like to read quietly or sit with me for a while?” By being attuned to the subtle signs of their physical and emotional needs, I help children feel seen, respected, and supported. This responsiveness builds trust and promotes healthy physical development, reinforcing that they are safe and cared for in their learning environment.

Remaining authentic in this role promotes positive connections and experiences.
