The Louisiana Purchase was the acquisition of the Louisiana territory from France in 1803. The United States paid 15 million dollars in todays dollars, for approximately 827,000 square miles of land. The Louisiana territory stretched from the Mississippi river in the east to the Rocky Mountains in the west from the Golf of Mexico in the south to the Canadian order in the North part all of 15 states were eventually created from this purchase. This event is a key one because it is how our country started and how many other key events started. This event lead to the civil war because it was the event that started many different wars and people starting to realize that land was a very important thing to many people and was needed to e fought for.

Several founders launched critiques of the save trade for violating natural rights. In a draft of the declaration of independence, Thomas Jefferson attacked the slave trade in harsh language, calling it "cruel war against human nature itself, violating its most sacred rights of life and liberty in the persons of a distance people." This is a key event because it caused many conflicts and caused a war. Slavery caused the civil war.

By the early 1800's, most Northern states had abolished slavery and the slave trade. In the south, the invention of the cotton gin in 1793 made cotton a major industry and increased the need for enslaved labor. Tension increased between the north and the south as the slave or free states of new states was debated. This was a key event because it led to more of a problem for the cotton gin. This was still the civil war pretty much.

Due to the slave trade clause in the constitution, congress could not ban trans Atlantic slave trade until 1807. In January 1807, with a population of over four million enslaved people in the south, some southern congressmen joined with the north in voting to abolish the African slave trade, an act that became effective January 1, 1808. The trade of enslaved people within the south was still allowed, however, and children of enslaved people' automatically became enslaved ensuring a self- sustaining enslaved population in the south. This is a key event because it was an event that continued to cause more problems with slavery and more slaves being brought into the United States. This lead to the civil war because it was apart of the slave trade.

Tasked by President Thomas Jefferson to map the territory, establish friendly trade relationships with water way to connect to the pacific ocean. Lewis and Clark journeyed more than 8,000 miles for two years, Their discoveries directed the future course of American exploration and expansion. This is a key event because this is how we know so much about our territory's were now our states. This lead us to the civil war because it was expansion.

The Louisiana purchase doubled the size of the United States. The land was all divided into territories and the territories could apply to become states. Illinois was a free state and Alabama was a slave state. When Missouri applied to become a state the congress made it months of angry debate. If Missouri was allowed to enter the union is a free state, then the south would lose its voting power, and it's power to block any anti-slavery bill's. Representatives fought against Missouri being added to the union as a free state. This is a key event because our states started to come together and fight for their states as free or not free from slavery. This led up to the civil war because slavery was a huge part of the civil war so as states were being added more slavery was also increasing so it was slowly rising to the war as states were being added.

The most important outcome of the treaty was that Spain ceded, or gave, Florida to the United States for $5 million. Thus, all of Florida was added to a growing United States. All that was known of the west was what had been learned from French traders or what was told in fantastical stories of the time- erupting volcanoes, mountains of salt, wooly mammoths, and seven foot tall beavers. After negotiating the Louisiana purchase Jefferson needed someone ton explore the west. This is a key event because if America didn't win their independence it would be wars for years and years. This lead to the civil war because it was a war to earn our independence and it also was apart of slavery.

Douglass wanted to open up the land so that the transcontinental railroad could pass through. Soon Kansas became a breeding ground for political violence. Settlers, both pro and anti-slavery, poured over the border of Kansas to support or oppose slavery. Two governments were set up, one supported slavery and other was against it. Violence broke out between pro and anti-slavery settlers, and Kansas became known as "Bleeding Kansas". This is a key event because it was an event that was very important to slaves and how hard it hit them to have to go to war. This was an event that was why the civil war happened.

Nat Turner slaged a slave rebellion and more than 50 white people were killed , enslaved people continued to assert their right to freedom by running away. 1846 war with Mexico broke out, and the U.S ultimately won the war. California would be added to the union as a free state. The fugitive slave act was passed- this act made it easier for slaveholders to find and take back the people they had enslaved who had run away. The slavery trade in Washington D.C ended (slavery didn't). The Mexican cession was divided into two territory's - New Mexico and Utah both would decide the issue of slavery by popular sovereignty. Finally, a border dispute between Texas and New Mexico was decided in favor of New Mexico. This is a key event because it was a huge part of slavery and states being added. This led to the civil war because it was what was apart of the civil war because of slavery.

Charles Sumner was a anti-slavery republican had told the senate that Kansas should either be added to the union as a slave or free state. He made a speech that was called "Crime against Kansas" speech, he had said that two Democratic senators had been the reason for the crimes, the senates names were- Stephan Douglas of Illinois, and Andrew Butler of South Carolina, he said that they were, "Noise-some squat and nameless animal, not proper for an American senator." Shortly after the Senate had adjourned for the day, Brooks entered the old chamber, where he found Sumner busily attaching his postal frank to copies of his "Crime Against Kansas" speech. Brooks slammed his metal-topped cane onto the unsuspecting Sumner's head. As Brooks struck again and again, Sumner rose and lurched blindly about the chamber, futilely attempting to protect himself. After a very long minute, it ended. Bleeding, Sumner was carried away. Sumner recovered slowly and returned to the Senate, where he remained for another 18 years. The nation, suffering from the breakdown of reasoned discourse that this event symbolized, tumbled onward toward the catastrophe of civil war. Brooks walked calmly out of the chamber without being detained by the stunned onlookers. Overnight, both men became heroes in their respective regions. This is a key event because it shows who really cared about slavery and who was trying to help slavery. This led up to the civil war because it was apart of the civil war.

The Mexican Cession was land was surrendered to the United States by Mexico at the end of the Mexican war. To the United States, this massive land grab was significant because the question of extending slavery into newly acquired territories had become the leading national political issue. Mexico had lost an enormous amount of territory and it was really embarrassing. The United States then acquired the territory that became the states of California, Nevada, Utah, and Arizona, with the exception of that territory that later was added by the Gadsden Territory in 1853. The price of this was $15 million to Mexico and $3,250,000 to cover the claims of American citizens against Mexico. This is a key event because it was how our states started to come together. This led to the civil war because it was a war before the purchase of the territory.

The election constitutes the first peaceful transfer of power from one political party to another in the United States. By 1800, when he decided to run for president, Thomas Jefferson possessed impressive political credentials and was well-suited to the presidency. In addition to drafting the Declaration of Independence, Jefferson had served in two Continental Congresses, as minister to France, as secretary of state under George Washington and as John Adams’ vice president. This is a key event because he is a president that caused many good and bad things to happen. This led to the civil war because he was the one that led us to civil war in the first place.

Northwest Ordinance

The Northwest Ordinance proposed that three to five new states be created from the Northwest territory. The ordinance provided for civil liberty within the new territory's, but not allow slavery. Pro-slavery southerners were willing to go along with this because they hoped that the new states would be populated by white settlers from the south. They believed that although these southerners would have no enslaved workers of the own, they would not join the growing abolition movement of the north. This is a key event because it is what led to more slavery. This led to the civil war because it was apart of slavery which was a huge part of the civil war.

Cotton Gin was Created

In 1794, U.S.-born inventor Eli Whitney (1765-1825) patented the cotton gin, a machine that revolutionized the production of cotton by greatly speeding up the process of removing seeds from cotton fiber. By the mid-19th century, cotton had become America’s leading export. Despite its success, the gin made little money for Whitney due to patent-infringement issues. Also, his invention offered Southern planters a justification to maintain and expand slavery even as a growing number of Americans supported its abolition. Based in part on his reputation for creating the cotton gin, Whitney later secured a major contract to build muskets for the U.S. government. Through this project, he promoted the idea of interchangeable parts–standardized, identical parts that made for faster assembly and easier repair of various devices. For his work, he is credited as a pioneer of American manufacturing. This was a key event because it was a huge part of slavery. This led to the civil war because it was slavery that caused most of the civil war.
