American identity's foundation was on God and relied on the ideas of: unity, liberty, freedom, and happiness. However, these values were not always put into action. We see this played out in the two accounts of native people of color. The values of America can mean different things to different people, so we must take this into consideration when defining American Identity. American Identity means to us the commitment to our country and the previously listed values. Taking into consideration those that our country has wronged and now working together with them to carry out the original intents of our founding fathers into the future.

According to Merriam Webster, identity is defined as, "The distinguishing character or personality of an individual or thing." And the characteristics that define America's identity are liberty, freedom, independence, truth, and the foundation of biblical principles. America is set apart compared with other nations because its founding documents weren't just founding a nation in the present, but rather striving toward an ideal that the nation wanted to achieve and become in the future. The documents we have recently read were written about characteristics of America they wanted in the future but not necessarily what was shown or existing in the present. The Declaration of Independence was envisioning a nation based on self-government and freedom but was written in a time they were oppressed and governed by others. Samuel Occom and Phillis Wheatley wrote about the future hope of unity and equality for all people regardless of skin color in a time of racial bias. All documents were written to grow America into what they wanted it to be, not what it was.
